Well, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now. I received the HV20 a few days ago and now I am sort of lost. I knew going into the purchase that shooting in HD would crack the safe, but holy cow....looks like I'll have to take on a 2nd job.

Anyway, in the instruction manual it says a program is required that is compatible with the HV20. I'm in the dark here. I just figured I could edit it with my standard programs already installed on the program, but no dice. So, what I need is a halfway decent program that won't break the bank. Can anyone cough up any suggestions? I shot some short vids of the eclipse the other night and it's frustrating me not being able to view them on the computer. Thanks for any replies.

I have the HV-20 as well. As for as HD editing I have no clue, but you you can get it to down convert to standard def by using the DV lock setting on the camera and using Windows Movie Maker. I always used that because it came on my computer and it was pretty easy to edit with. Nothing too fancy, but it does allow you to actually mess with your video for cheap. I will eventually have to break down a get a good editing software program myself at some point this year. It took me a couple of days to get the DV lock setting to work how I wanted. Also if you filmed in widescreen HD when you down convert it will stretch it out to fit standard def settings.

I use my iMac and Final Cut Express for editing. I can dump video right into FCE from my HV-20. It also works with iMovie, a simple video app bundled with Macs.

If you're looking for full-up video editing, I've had success using the demo of Sony Vegas Platinum with the HV20. Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus is also supposed to support HD but I haven't tried it with the HV20. Windows Movie Maker for Vista is also supposed to work with HD.

If you're just trying to get the video off the camera, try VideoLAN. No guarantees, but it is free.

just to confirm

So as my thinking from other threads, is that Adobe Premier and Pinnacle don't work with the camera, or is just in the HD setting.

Premiere Pro CS3 supports the HV20 but anything earlier does not. :)

What program are you using to edit Jeremy?

Well I used to have Ulead, but I uninstalled it a few days ago. I also have Windows Movie Maker. Neither worked. Ulead was a major computer hog and I didn't like its interface. It might have been a slightly older version, but I still would have thought it would have worked. I do have Vista on my cpu and WMM can't recognize the usb plug-in.

If I remember right, you can't export video on the HV20 using USB. You might try Firewire or HDMI instead :)

Ahhhhhhhhh.........yeah, I might want to try that lol. I'm not stupid, I've just been devoting most of my time to photography lately, so I haven't had any time to experiment with the HV20. Thanks for the information.

I just got a computer with Vista on it last week. After Cris said, Vista and WMM were supposed to work with HD, I had to try it out. It only took me about 5 minutes before I had drivers installed and had HD content on my computer from my camera. It is actually harder to get DV content off the camera. Now I have to get a burner that can support HD content or doesnt do any good to be able to work with it anyways.
