Any expectations for January?

I might be probably influenced by possibility of SDS intensifying, but still in winter, I will be expecting January not to be just a boring month.

Basically, I just expect severe windstorms in January. Such storms for example happened in 2005(9 January) and in 2007(mid-January). Such intense low pressure systems have brought my area gale-force winds, hurricane-force winds at our islands. Situation has sometimes even gone so serious that storm surge has occurred in some coastal areas. However, I sincerely hope that all severe weather occurs before 7 January.

What are you looking forward to see in January? I have heard that it is still very warm in the southern parts of the U.S.

Tarmo, I do not see a windstorm or such thing occuring in following weeks. High pressure system stalls over much of European continent. Also, in many parts, modified air mass prevails, with cold air near the ground and temperature inversion above. Many places have sub-zero temperatures whole day.

Most of the windstorms that occured in previous years were following the intrusion of warm and humid air into the Europe ( fuel for the windstorms). But I do not see that occuring anytime soon.

High pressure area is good news for me, I would not mind a calm month this time.

However, my question was more that what would you like to see, what are you looking forward to in January?

I look forward to January getting over with quickly. It's the coldest month here in Kansas and seems so long. After January is over, February is a piece of cake, and then the next thing you know it's March, and we all can chase... those speed shear storms with low contrast! haha.

Well, it's been a pretty damn active December, so I'm betting January will be a little quieter. We haven't seen a huge arctic outbreak yet, so I'm sure we'll get a nice one of those in coming weeks. Hopefully we can fit a January thaw in there too, since there's been snow on the ground pretty much since early December...

The GFS has been showing the last few runs a major arctic outbreak across ALL of the US the first week of January. We could see temps in the low 30's all the way south to Mexico. I was expecting to see very mild temps in January, but you never know it could warm up by the end of the month. All I can say is bring on Spring!

I am hoping for a repeat of the January '92 Nebraska cold core tornadic mini-supercell event next month. Hopefully there are still patches of snow on the ground as a bonus!

im sure there might be a couple isolated events out there...

southern, MS has been getting a few weak systems...

good dynamics, but lacking instability...

thats about all id expect for the next 2 weeks or so...

My expectations for January are that it will lead to February, which will lead to March--and the sooner that happens, the better. I'm just not into winter weather. But I start feeling my blood heating up with anticipation once March rolls in.

I saw my first tornado of 2007 on February 28 near Kansas City. I'd love for 2008 to throw me that kind of a bone. :p

Well, whatever January brings us, it will be hard pressed to make it as boring as December - or even November. So far our record low for this season stands at a whopping 27oF - ooOoOoOohhh. At this point I'm just happy if it's dry and sunny so I can at least get some outdoor exercise.
