Android Phones

You can have the best of both worlds. Gert an Android phone and an iPod touch. The Android phones can offer hotspot capabilities. That can provide wifi anywhere for the iPod touch.

This is the route I'm looking to go too. Until iPhone is offered by other carriers, I'm not going to touch it. But I use the iPod touch for lots of different things and can still access anything I want with a hotspot-capable Droid phone.

Unrevoked released their latest version and i was able to root. I'll probably have to do a hard reset and root again though because i never have been able to send pics through text even at the lowest resolution. I was told by sprint to exchange it after working on it for an hour, but we will see what happens. Barnacle doesn't work but Wireless Tether does, which is free. Don't forget to install the drivers first.

James,

What HBoot version did you have? I just picked up the Evo last week (coolest device EVER in my opinion), but with HBoot of 2.02, even the new Unrevoked won't root it. Would really like my wireless tethering back.

Let the crazy CES announcements begin! First score is for AT&T oddly. Check out this new version of the Galaxy S line called the Infuse. 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus display. Insanely thin too and will have 4G compatibility whenever AT&T's 4G network comes online. Peep the details here...

Edit - Another huge win for AT&T. The Moto Atrix dual core phone with 1gig of RAM and 4G compatibility coming later this year. This phone can also attach to a separate unit which will turn it into a laptop-ish device. Crazy!

Edit 2 - HTC launches new Android mega phone for AT&T too. The HTC Inspire...You'd think AT&T was losing their iPhone exclusivity or something hahaha...Well done to them on finally bolstering their Android lineup.

- Sony Ericsson (remember them?!) launching Xperia Arc. It will launch with Gingerbread. Not sure which carrier will have it though. Looks nice!

This is actually what I have now. Just got the Droid X yesterday and I'll be exploring the abilities before it comes time to chase.

I have been patient and have decided to stick with AT&T for the time being. I have never had many personal problems with them and they have treated me well. I almost jumped the gun on the Samsung Captivate as I wanted a good Android phone (for obvious reasons) however, I am not eligible for an update until the 20th and decided to wait until then instead of paying an un-Godly amount for a smartphone. With these announcements, my wait may get extended a bit and I will likely try my hand at the newest Samsung whenever it gets released. I have played with several Samsungs and am very pleased with the way they operate. It is insane how fast this stuff is coming out and how quickly old smartphones are getting outdated. Its almost unreal. It makes me wonder on purchasing a phone as it will be incredibly outdated after a year. At some point this stuff has to slow down right? I thought that it would slow when I got my LG Vu, a phone that was held highly at its release point, just to have it go to dust in a year and a half....now if only this wait can go faster....

Motorola just had their CES press conference and it's official, the tablet will be called the Xoom and the new LTE phone for Verizon will be called the Droid Bionic. Terrible name but looks like an amazing phone. Dual Core 1 gig processor. LTE compatible with a 4.3 inch screen. Coming out this quarter! Details here...

First Motorola Bionic Hands-On video is up! *DROOL* lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU5wyYas3Q0&feature=sub

Yeah I'm drooling too! After seeing the rest of the new Verizon phones coming out and still somewhat in shock that the new HTC Thunderbolt isn't dual core, I will be pairing the Bionic with the Xoom the day they become available. Looks soon for the tablet and maybe April or May for the phone. Cannot wait!

OK...so my Alltel plan is up soon and Verizon contacted me saying I am going to finally be switched to Verizon. I have until Feb 11th to take advantage of a discount for a new phone, 2 free months of voice service and free activation.

I have been a Blackberry user for the past year and I like my Blackberry for the most part. I am looking at the Droid Pro for its blackberry style keyboard...I would sacrifice screen size and its not a Blackberry.
I like the looks and reviews of the Droid X and the Samsung Fascinate. I am Android ignorant and could use some help here!! Should I wait for the Bionic?? Anyone here have the Droid Pro?? I currently tether with my Blackberry and want to be able to tether (or hotspot).

Chris,

The way you described the situation, you have to make your decision by Feb 11th. It was announced at CES that the Bionic(much like all of the new Android 4G phones) will not be released until Quarter 2, which is roughly April-June, so at the earliest the Bionic will be released in April(I hope because Im so ready to upgrade from my HTC Eris and will likely be getting the Bionic). If you're used to Blackberry than I would probably say the closest you're gonna get to it is the Droid Pro. One thing you can do is root it and download an app called Wireless Tether and tether for free that way.

Thought I'd give this a bump since HTC's Thunderbolt is launching Thursday (3/17) on Verizon. Special for a couple reasons. This is Verizon's first 4G LTE compatible phone. Also (and here's the biggie) they are offering unlimited data 3G AND 4G for 29.99/month. This is a limited time offer because Verizon is going to tiered data later in May/June. Also to sweeten the pot, they are allowing the WiFi hotspot on this phone to be free of charge all the way until May 15th. So anyway, if you have an upgrade on standby, this could be a good time to cash in. I was waiting for the Moto Bionic but the data plan I can get now on the Thunderbolt is almost too good to pass up and I don't want to get stuck in a tiered plan. Here's an article explaining it better than I can...

I got fed up with Verizon....My fiance and I were being absolutely raped by our monthly bill so we had to consider something more economical. We switched to T-Mobile just 3 days ago and I got the new Samsung Galaxy S 4G. To my surprise, I have 1-2 bars of 4G here where I live, which the coverage map didnt show. Overall, we're pretty happy we switched, its easier on the wallet. We're saving about $50-$60 a month.

That's a nice phone! Definitely not a bad way to go...T-Mob is pretty solid. I will write a full review of the Thunderbolt once I get it out this weekend for a hopeful chase!
