Where is ST really headed and what does it need?

About the only time I use the report function is when someone says "nice pictures" in the reports thread. I hate sifting through crap to get to the reports of a particular event. All in all, some very good posts and ideas in this thread. I think were getting somewhere with this.

Good day all,

I am wondering how an area, like the Bar and Grill, is "subscribed" to?

I see that in the changes that some areas will need a subscription.

Are there any steps on how to do this?

Thanks,

Go to the "User CP"
Find "Networking" on the left side
Click "Group Memberships"

LOL thanks. I was reading the balloon boy thread earlier and next page everything vanished on me. Went to main area and was wondering if Bar and Grill was just terminated all together. I just figured that was the case and never would have realized it was still there to get to had I not read this thread again.

What if a forum was opened up in the community section that is like the one that links you to the Stormtrack Chat only have it link you to the option to turn Bar and Grill on or off.

I understand what Tim was trying to do by hiding it but honestly if someone isn't grown up enough to just simply not visit the B&G and ignore it when they see that a thread isn't to their liking then they are not adult enough to be of much value to this site and don't have any business being a member for if they can't control themselves from taking internet edrama personally or simply just have to start a fight and call others ignorant because they don't share the same view point then they shouldn't be allowed to post at all.

I think the problem with that is some people use the "New Posts" feature. When you have 2x the amount of posts in B&G than the other topics, you have to weed through them. I don't use this feature personally, so it's not an issue for me... but others have expressed "concern."

Once again, if you don't have the maturity to keep scrolling past the trash then move along to another forum. That is like people who have to drive through the rough part of town to get to work and demand walls be built up along either side of the street they take since they don't want to have to look at the run down ghetto. If they don't like it then move.
I still think the answer to the problem will be through better moderating practices and people not acting like this is some sorta day time soap opera and taking things said about them as well as a preteen Jr. High drama queen. I have been the mod on several gaming sites before and know that moderating a forum of even a few hundred people is no easy task and I am not trying to slam the mods on here with my post. I know I don't post a lot on this site and you may be like, "wtf is this kid?", but if you look down at the list of users who are currently online you will see I lurk a lot as I have no life (especially in the off season).

I think you saved a penny by making that the longest sentence on record ;)

The followup is right - most people click "new posts" and having the B&G junk out of there makes it easier to see weather related stuff only.

Part of the problem is Stormtrack, because of its regional bias in the central and south US, has a high proportion of religious and conservative users. We also have a few users under 18. There's also my own preference to keep the professionalism of the site and try to avoid having to deal with a Fark or 4chan type of chat board. So the barriers are going to have to go up, either to the overall conduct and content, or the proportion of members who can access it. What we have now is both, a sort of compromise, instead of emphasis on one or the other.
