I came across this thing today. It is a Universal external antenna for any cell phone. http://www.cellphoneshop.net/exanforceph.html

It doesnt attach by a jack or anything, so it may not work at all but there is only one way to find out. I believe the phone just rests against it. I wouldnt have bought it if it was not as cheap as it was. My reception has never been too bad, but if this will help fill the small gaps between towers it will be worth the money. The sale on this ends today I believe.

Sorry - only one word comes to mind - Crap . It is an antenna with an induction adapter. Induction only works at all with phones with no RF port and interior anyennas. And then for any results at all you have to use an amplifier

I am using the HTC PPC6800 with Alltel. Nice unit as it is a Windows Mobile 6 based phone, PDA style, that allows me to also use it for browsing.

This unit has worked great so far, although I will have to say that the Razer that I was using before had a bit better signal strength. Also, I decided to spend the extra $10 a month and add a second (free) phone to my plan for talking.

I figured I'd get some information from you guys before I head and try to talk to somebody at Alltel about it and they try to misinform me. I'm looking to do the tethering on my alltel phone this year and just wanted to see if I'm on the right information. I can go to the Motorola site and download the driver to use with my phone and then I can use any USB cable that I have to connect the phone to my computer?

I need to see when my contract is up, etc. with my current plan and see if I can get a new phone that has EVDO or any better connectivity. Currently, my nice ol' Motorola V323 only has the 1xRTT capability, anybody used a phone with that? It says the speeds will max out at 144 kb/s...

Otherwise, I should be able to start up the tethered option and use it on days that I wish and then also turn it 'off' when days I'm not going to be using it to save a few bucks. How long does it typically take to turn it on/off, can I activate it and then within minutes start using it?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to get all this stuff straight by some of the experts on here that are likely better than my Alltel reps... Thanks

I just signed up with Alltel last week. They'll want to sell you the Internet Connectivity Kit for $70, but you don't need it. It only includes a USB cable and the software, which you don't need. I just used Motorola Phone Tools, which set up the DUN connection automatically. Not sure about turning it off/on during the month, but everyone else says it's possible.

I will be using my Verizon LG VX 8300. Already talked to the Verizon people, just have to buy the software and then take the phone to the Verizon people and they will activate the tethering option.

Thank you, I have tried the AT&T connection manager but I'm not very happy with how it works. I have the $60 unlimited plan right now. Still learning alot about this phone, lots of things hidden in it. I'm still trying to get the ICS to work, apparently it is not bundled with Windows Mobile 6 but there are some items that can be installed to cure this and enable ICS. The ICS is alot faster from what I have been told. The phone has a true GPS reciever built in as well witch can be unlocked and can be used with other products besides TeleNav.

I'll see how it goes.

**the phone has a SiRF III GPS reciever**

Hey,

Looks like we are on the same network, same phone, same data plan as you.

We used ours for the first time yesterday and we weren't all that happy with it - the data worked OK *when you got connected*, but it seems that 50% of the time the Blackjack displays an error message stating "check USB cable" when trying to tether to the laptop. Have you had any problems like this??

This sounds like a driver issue. Can you reinstall the motorola driver and see if you still have the same issues.

Are you running wm5 or WM 6 ?

Verizon

I have used an LG VX8300 with cable and without (bluetooth). I am currently using a VX 10000 (Voyager) through the bluetooth DUN.

It simply creates a modem connection that uses a specific COM port. I think mine dials #777 if I recall correctly.

I think it works great. Only drawback is that it doesn't work everywhere.

Are they giving you a free month of service for everytime you post about them ?

No, :D it's just I know there are all these threads about cell phones and connectivity and I've been researching this stuff for some time trying to get the best data at the cheapest rate with flexibility. I wanted to tie all these threads together, because I thought they all might like to see my post about Millenicom. I thought it was relevant.

From what I've read most seem to agree that Sprint seems to have the best network and coverage for speed and data; however they have those darned contracts - ouch. I just can't stand putting up all that cash - especially when I'm not using it because I'm not chasing. It appears that Millenicom uses Sprint and has all the pluses but low cost and no contract. Appears to be the best deal. Then again Millenicom is changing too...you'll have to read the thread for that. I posted it in my Tornadoxtreme Chase Cam thread because at the time I was unable to connect. However all the discussion should really be in 'Equipment'.
