Im use a Razr.. But, my problem is I cannot tether and talk at the same time..

Does anyone have a US Cellular phone that they use that can tether and talk at the same time? Maybe like a moto Q or a blackberry

Pretty sure you can't do both at the same time. If you need dedicated internet while you talk, you need to get a data card for your computer or a second phone.

I use my ATT tilt and a USB cable. The tilt has a built in internet client and you can pay $20 for unlmited internet. Just make sure that you select media net in your connection manager.

Called Alltel Tech today, was missing a software update on my phone. Got it updated atthe local Alltel store. Been working like a champ so far, 825 k/bs. just waiting to see how dependable this will with the hx of this for the past year for me.

I just picked up a Samsung Blackjack II with the AT&T unlimited data plan. I have not had the chance to use it on my laptop yet because the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) files are missing out of the phone and I'm working on getting this updated. Once I get it working I'm going to experiment with both the USB tether and the Bluetooth connection and see how the two compare. The connection through the phone is very quick using Mobile 6 (on 3G) and I'm hoping it will be just as quick tethered to the computer.

Download ATT connection manager and go with the USB cable cause bluetooth is very slow .

Also make sure that you select media.net and not ATT.ISP if you are on a $20data plan.

Thank you, I have tried the AT&T connection manager but I'm not very happy with how it works. I have the $60 unlimited plan right now. Still learning alot about this phone, lots of things hidden in it. I'm still trying to get the ICS to work, apparently it is not bundled with Windows Mobile 6 but there are some items that can be installed to cure this and enable ICS. The ICS is alot faster from what I have been told. The phone has a true GPS reciever built in as well witch can be unlocked and can be used with other products besides TeleNav.

I'll see how it goes.

I have a Sprint data card and my family is on a plan so I'd like to stick with Sprint if at all possible for on-the-road data. They seem to have good coverage and it would be nice not to have to sign another contract with another company. If any of you have good experience with using Sprint for data please enlighten me on a few things.

1. Has anyone found a a way to use their unlimited data plan for only a few months and then cancel it without any big fees involved?

2. Would it be more affordable to use a phone/tethering system for data instead and if so what phone would you suggest?

3. Are there any so-called tricks of the trade in working with Sprint to get better deals, or to make the connection faster, etc?

Thanks!

Fabian

Fabian that's where it pays to have Alltel. Swap plans at any time with no fees what so ever. I heard some carriers make you renew your contract in order to change plans.

Far as faster connection I found that my USB tether is a lot faster than bluetooth.

And don't forget that you can go to alltell and not even have a contract .

all you have to do is bring your own phone and then you are contract free :)

For those that have Alltel, using the updated USB driver (downloaded from the Motorola Developer website), what are the settings for Dial Up Networking? I'm about to get an Alltel plan with the unlimited data add-on option, and would rather just set up the connection myself with DUN rather than pay extra for the mobile kit. I haven't signed up for Alltel just yet, but probably will this week. Also, one other thing, the Razr V3a (which is replacing the V3c/m) that is on the Alltel.com website doesn't support EVDO.

I'm on AT&T and will soon be upgrading to a new phone, which I may use for tethering. I'm just wondering if anyone is aware of any models with a jack for an external antenna. I know aircards are the best way to go for good reception, but am definitely not interested in the mandatory 2-year contract, being on a college student's budget. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff, so there may or may not even be any phones in existence with the ability to hook up to a car-mounted antenna, but just figured I'd check.

user name your phone number
Dial #777
password alltel

You do not need the mobile kit as it is a scam .

Almost all the new PDA phones have an external jack . 2 year contracts are not mandatory and you can bring your own phone and be contract free or do a 1 year contract for a slight discount . Do you want a black jacK ?

The best mobile phone I've ever used is an older Mot. V551. (I have two, one I use and a second as a back-up). The V551 has Edge and will tether wonderfully with computers via Bluetooth. There is also a browser on the phone so I get SPC/NWS, sports scores etc., via the phone alone. It's important to have a phone with a physical antenna. Does not sound important, but I've had people chase with me with almost every service and phone combination you can imagine, and my phone set-up will beat them every time -- picking-up service, including data, in about 90% of the Alley, including most portions of eastern Colorado. I use ATT since they have more towers, although I'm guessing they all share now days. The rollover minutes are great for chasing. I also use an in car phone cradle with a high-end, military-type, high gain antenna. I also use an unlocked iPhone, (via la revolution!), but it's poorly designed antenna (and lack of an external antenna port) along with the inability to tether, make it a good secondary source near major highways and cities. I am experimenting with a gov. contractor on a new antenna system.

Cheers:

Warren

Thanks for the info. I ended up going with a Samsung A727, which is HSDPA-capable and, more importantly, has a jack for an external antenna. As far as I could tell, this was the only non-PDA phone in the AT&T store I visited with such a jack... none of the LG or other Samsung models had it. Now I'll probably grab a MagMount antenna for the car and hopefully be getting coverage on par with an aircard but without the contract.
