Warning Lights

Did you stop the people who turned around and ask them if they did so because of chasers passing by them driving towards the storm? If not then you are making assumptions.

And why do you need people to know that you are a storm chaser? From my personal experiences early on, making it known that you are a chaser is an invite for any yahoo who wants to to follow you around. Unfortunately for you, once they are on your tail following you there isn't much you can do as they have just as much of a right to be there as you do. So have fun with that parade of vehicles behind you and enjoy having to talk to each and every local who keeps ruining your shots while taking pictures or keeping you from enjoying your hobby.

If people want to have lights and stickers so be it, but don't make it sound like by having lights, stickers and everything else that makes you stand out ends up saving lives because it doesn't. If nothing else, it attracts people to a dangerous location because they want to follow the "cool chasers" so they can see something.

Well I guess you are right in saying I'm making assumptions. But it's not very common for 5 people to stop and turn around on I-75 and go in the opposite direction, 1 or 2 maybe, but not 5. They aren't coming off, i'll tell you that now. Lights or no lights is like republican and democrat, won't ever agree. Personal choice. I believe they work so there you have it.

I'm not trying to act "cool" that's what pisses me off most, when people associate lights with somebody trying to act "cool". That's not the point. If you're stopped on the side of the road, you should have lights to make yourself more visible, it's that simple. Construction vehicles don't have mini-lightbars to act cool, they're there for a reason.

I don't expect people to know that it means "Tornado Warning" but just yesterday while on the funnel NE of lyndon, people saw the chasers going towards the storm and a majority of vehicles turned around and went the other direction once we drove by, that's proof right there it warns people. How would people know we are chasers without having lights? Stickers can't be seen from 360 degrees last time i checked and everybody has hazard lights.

I really don't understand what you guys have against it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with lights (to a degree), it's personal choice, end of story.

Enough said.... :) Good points!

Construction vehicles and storm chasers vehicles don't even fall into the same category, that is a terrible comparison. Construction vehicles typically have company policies in place regarding the use of strobes and light bars that their employee's have to abide by so they really have no choice, that is a bad analogy for you to use. My dad worked for the electric company and when they were on service calls they were required to have their strobes activated. Also those vehicles and the crew take up a lot more space on the side of the road than you do. So don't compare your reasons for wanting to use strobe lights to why construction and other service trucks use them, totally different as most of them are required to.

Believe it or not, those emergency flashers that your vehicle is equipped with really do just fine. Take it from someone who has been chasing for 13 years and have yet ever had someone slam into me because they couldn't see my emergency flashers. Just don't park on the actual road where the flow of traffic is and you will be fine.

I have yet to ever hear of a chaser getting slammed by a passing motorist simply because they didn't have strobes and a light bar going. When that starts to happen, then I might admit you have a valid point.

I don't see how it's not a good point. The reason construction companies require vehicles to have those lights flashing is so people see them, seems like a pretty valid point to me..

There is no harm in having a lightbar so I'm really not sure why you're making such a fuss. It's better to be seen than not seen. I'm not saying hazards don't do the trick, I'm sure they do, I just feel more comfortable having an actual small bar on the top of my truck.

By the time chasers start being ran into, it's too late. I'd rather it not happen in the first place.

Since we are talking about construction vehicles, warning motorists, and avoiding pedestrian PI's, how many of you wear "highway safety vests" while outside of your vehicle? Our department mandates them for any roadside incident, as do most other public service institutions and construction companies. Seem only logical that chasers should.....

I also wear a helmet, wrap myself in bubble wrap and wear personal flotation devices. It never hurts to be too safe!:D

I like to remain hidden in the woodwork but it would be nice to put a light bar on my Jimmy so I wont get run over. Do they make em in camouflage so it would match my Jimmy? I should probably add a camouflage antenna or two as well so it will look more official.

I run the lightbar on top while stopped on the road and I've got a fluorescent orange vest I use while im outside the truck.

Stop parking and standing in the middle of the road and you wouldn't need either of those.

im lawling at this thread. :D

I've got lights. I think they're essential to warn the public and make yourself visible. They don't give you super powers, people NEED to understand that. With that said, not sure why people get pissed off when they see somebody with lights..

As long as they're used responsibly, I see absolutely nothing wrong with them.

The light in my windshield is only on when there is a Tornado Warning.
