Texas Panhandle Winter Storm Warning (again)

Karen,
As of 10:30 central we have very heavy snow bands along I-40 from Amarillo east to Shamrock with winds of 15-20mph so you should drive into at times almost whiteout conditions coming into the panhandle. Radar shows good snow still from central NM all the way to the Oklahmo border. some of it may actually be convective snow since clovis radar is in precip mode and not clear air. make sure you have your SUV and a jar of beatnut butter in case you get stuck

The snow that is falling now is large wet snowflakes. I-40 east is still open.

You may not be able to see much but here is a tower cam from downtown.

Thanks! Getting ready to leave at 12. Can you suggest any decent non-chain places to eat in Amarillo for dinner?? :D

Karen

I pm'd ya a couple good places to eat Karen.

I-40 is wet but no snowpack. the side roads are mostly covered. dont know about outside of town. it is coming down right now with huge snowflakes at about 1"+ an hour.

By now, I'm sick of snow......(speaking from central New York)....
Though I must say, the 961 mb low that "bombed out" off the coast last week was quite something to behold. This place was like a tundra, and I had a close encounter with a so-called "snow devil" that spun up in front of me as I was walking down a snowbank.

Enjoy the storm down there guys..

The interesting thing is in about three weeks or so there could be tornadic supercells traversing the landscape in that area and this will all be a distant memory.

That has to be an interesting place to live!

Let's hope so... in a tornado pool, I picked the first tornado day in Oklahoma to be Mar. 28 and in Roger Mills county... last I checked they had 7" of snow!

3 weeks nothing. 3 days ago we were 83 degrees. it will take a bit longer to warm up with our snowpack but I can see it chasable by next monday. I would settle for a red river day. I have to make at least 1 trip to Throckmorton in march or early april

Now up to about 10 inches where I am and still no signs of letting up for at least the next 12 hrs. New enhancement near clovis heading this way. the I-40 corridor is the bullseye today.

Watch out for those Clovis enhancements... maybe the USAF wants to mess with people and drop some Chaff ; )

Aaron

if so its the kind that melts  . clovis is still in precip mode and is lighting up with nice reflectivity returns. Looks to be a long winters night. Good evening to settle down and play BF1942 on the PC.

If I wasnt at work I would grap a few pics. Maybe when I get home. Camera shots dont do snow storms justice. huge flakes falling. quarter size and up. Nice wet slushy snow. I think half the company went home after lunch. the buildings seem deserted.

I wonder what kind of progress Gene and Karen are making heading west towards me.

Still snowing hard.

Latest reports are they are shutting down I-40 from the west side of Amarillo west to the state line in the next hour. Unknow for how long. Havent heard anything about east of Amarillo yet.

When I got home I measured 5 spots in the back yard. all were between 13-14 inches and it is still snowing. I took a few pics just to give an idea. I shoveled a path on the deck first to give an idea of depth.

Must be nice to live in a town that actually experiences weather. Here in the void of Norman, we couldn't even manage a steady rain today with a 90% chance forecast. This is the perfect place to build the new NWC, because it is in no danger of being damaged by Natural forces.

lol -- maybe a dormant fault line will become active again soon and you can enjoy an earthquake or two ...

The truth is that Amarillo has been getting better winter weather than KC has the last couple of years too ... to quote Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, the best way to describe winter here these days:

"You want a winter weather prediction? It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's gonna last the rest of your life."

Thats more snow then we have had so far in 2005 up here in
Edmonton. The only thing we can depend on for moisture is the spring
white washers(heavy spring snowstorms in May).
