Storms of 2008?

would it help to post sort of an application form?

Reading I was thinking that if there was a sort of application form (word document or ?) that could be filled out to sort out WWWWW (who, what ,when , where and why).
Just thinking that this might speed up stuff.
I could help with a chapter development possibly.
But I don't know how much time I could devote to a project with lots of things to do. But I would like to contribute
(PS it might be ripe for time to post dates?)

Dear Mr. Adams,

To make this answer S & S I will say that the project has enough people to handle it through it's one year duration and is now officially going to happen. However, if we have others to cover the open positions it will make it that much easier on everyone involved. We all have lives outside of this project and there is no need to take a big dip into that. This structure simply makes it easier on everyone involved. If no one steps up to take the other positions, the project will still carry on and those tasks will be absorbed by those of us already committed.

First things first though we need more volunteers for chapter producers.
So if you want to produce a chapter(s) please let Tony know asap. If you have questions about being a chapter producer please feel free to ask here or contact me privately.

Just a thought - why not have one "other dates" chapter as a kind of catch-all for short videos of tornadoes or other interesting events from days that weren't on the list. June 4, 6, and 7 in Illinois, for example, might be examples of days that don't have enough for a full chapter, but together with other dates and places, might provide enough good video for an interesting chapter.

I agree with especially Adam Lucio's and Andrew Pritchard's amazing video from the Chicago south suburb's tornado on June 7th it would be hard pressed NOT to include it. Pending their approval of course.

Thanks for the reply...I think this is what many people were wanting to know.

Just an FYI...I wasn't criticizing the new structure at all, just trying to understand if it was a "set in stone" deal or not. I was seeing a ton of activity on the production side of things with people ready to move forward but nothing much from the administrative side. I was just confused as to which way this was all heading; fill out all positions or bust, or the project is a go regardless.

Being from "across the pond", I always have enjoyed watching these DVDs to give me an idea of what has happened for the rest of the season away from my annual 2 weeks. I think the entire concept is a fantastic one, and would love to contribute footage from this year's chase.

I have at least *some* footage from each of these days:

May 22nd - Grainfield; Hoxie.
May 23rd - Quinter (but only very distant); powerflash shots/brief (very dark) tornado vid from Ellis
May 26th - 2 tornadoes near Pratt, KS; golfball size hail west of Pratt prior to this
May 29th - Kearney tornado; various shots of the HP supercell near and east of Grand Island and York.

It would be nice if there was some way of including the historic flooding that occurred this year. I'm thinking MO/AR in March (twice) and then WI/IA/IL in June. Maybe the flooding could be a chapter in itself? I'm not volunteering to do this one, but I would have photos to contribute from AR. Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

That is a good idea. I was at RedRock,Cedar Rapids and Iowa City aswell as along the Iowa and South Skunk Rivers and saw the flooding first hand. For many people thier lives were changed forever after thier homes were flooded out. The flooding was so severe that it will go down in history as one of the worst the Middwest and mabey even the US has ever seen. Such a historic event in my oppiniun deserves a chapter.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I ‘d rather see the” Storms of 20XX” stay focused on severe thunderstorms that were documented by storm chasers. We have more than enough of those events to fill a DVD. I just don’t see what the need is to expand to different types of weather or severe weather events not observed by storm chasers.

Agreed. This thing is enough of a chore as is without expanding to 'in the news' type events.

I can see the logic in keeping it to severe thunderstorm events; the only reason why I brought it up is because the '05 edition covered Katrina.

I know some storm chasers has observed the flooding. I know some of them including Dennis Sherrod has footage of the flooding.

You guys allowed a chapter for Hurricane Katrina and a speacial chapter for Eric Nyguyen. Why is this different? This was a historic event and one that rarely ever happens on this level. Mabey if you guys saw the flooding like some of us did you would understand and I think people would watch a chapter on the flood's of 08.

I think people would like a change once in awhile instead of the same old storm structure and tornado footage. I think I have said enough and will let it be at that.

I spoke this evening with a friend who has a home recording studio and with whom I've recorded a number of CDs. He's a skilled sound engineer, and he's game to collaborate with me gratis on a couple sound tracks for SO2008. We can pull in other musicians as needed.

I'm uncertain what's required, though, or what the procedure is. Is it enough for us to just go ahead and lay down some instrumental stuff, then submit it and let chapter editors slice and dice it to fit their needs? It would be cool to create music for an actual finished chapter, but I suspect that's too far toward the back end of the process and the schedule will rule it out--or am I wrong?

Katrina was observed/documented by chasers. And, IMO, video of a flood is about as interesting as watching paint dry. But what do I know about what makes an interesting storm video.

Yeah, we could throw in some home improvement ideas and gardening tips. Same ole storm structure and tornado footage? Why even bother with a DVD in the first place then? It's unfortunate now that the people behind this project have finally gotten it going, and we're arguing over content on a storm chasing DVD. Just another example of why, IMO, this isn't even fun anymore...just something that's now expected, and expected to be better every time.

The first comparison I could draw wasn't quite as boring as watching paint dry. First thing that popped into my head was as fun as watching cows eat grass. Of course either of those would be more fun than anything I've caught on video the last few years, lol.

I will go and take photos of flooding around here. Later, when I end up looking at them again, I'm like, damn, why did I do that. Flooding footage is just a hair more boring than hurricane footage(which is horribly boring itself 99.5% of the time, imo).

I got to thinking about the whole flood vs. hurricane vs. tsunami, vs. .....

Yes, the floods affected a certain amount of people, yes, they are a weather event. However, most flooding is localized to a certain region and generally does not have a nationwide (or worldwide) impact.

Katrina had Nationwide impact in that it displaced thousands of people permanently, shook some of the US Government Organizations to their foundations, loss of life was devestating and basically ruined a very large City. The Indonesian Tsunami, had the same affects but on a much larger scale.

However, flooding did not afect the national economy, though it did temporarily displace a great many people, the affects generally, are not still being felt. With exceptions to places like Coffeyville Kansas (and surrounding area) and some others, it was pretty much, the water came up, washed out a few roads, drowned some cows and went back down. It might be different if this were the really big flood a few years ago, that did affect a great many people and a couple of larger cities. But for this one? My opinion would be No.

That being said, I'm not running the ship, so it's up to the powers that create this DVD. :)
