Storms of 2008?

tracks and Macs and date/chapters

Thanks. That was a good round up of additional information to questions.
People with macs can also help.
I would particularly like mac people to contact me if they might engage in helping out . We can talk!
With the macs (iMovie and pc too) sound and audio go in tracks.
These can be overlaid with the video which has a different track.
Yes these tracks can be turned off and on. Those on that is what you will hear with the sound.
Garageband, the music player, can also be used to create your own music and overlay etc .

I am still working on my stuff for a possible chapter.

Does a director/assnt need to be assigned first before chapter and dates are organized talked about?

Toward the end of the month, once it is clearer how many likely chapter producers we will have, we will decide how many/which chapters we want in the video (provided we have a definite lead editor at that point, too). I just went off the top of my head and made a preliminary list of dates, and I have 15 dates. Now some of those are quite likely to be cut, some would probably end up being like the February 23rd chapter last year (30s-1min long), and some, like May 23rd, would likely end up being very substantial chapters (ala May 4th last year).

I would offer to step up but I have never edited video in my life....really the only thing I know how to do is to score music to a video and then send the clip to someone else to edit into it. So...as much as I would like to step up to keep the tradition alive, I am afraid that I would be the wrong person to do it.

Has anything about SO2008 been sent out over the other chaser-related discussion groups?

I would do it but I would not know what to do or what I am doing. I would be lost. I am sure this is the problem for many here who want to do it but won't do it. I think the person to keep this tradition alive should be someone who knows what he is doing. I would realy hate to see this great way to give back to the people who need it through the American Red Cross just dissapear because nobody who can do this want's to take the helm.

I guess we may just have to let it be and move on if nobody is willing to take over.

Ps. Mickey you did a good job on SO2007 and I would like to say Thankyou for everything and for the hard work you have done for this project.

I don't get it. Maybe there's a reality I'm missing here, but why does this project need to rise or fall by whether the lead roles are filled by August 30? I understand that such things affect process and scheduling, and those things in turn affect the release date, but in the case of Storms of 2008, does it make a practical difference, from the standpoint of sales and marketing, whether publication is delayed by a month or two?

I realize that the answer could in fact be, "Yes, it does make a difference, and here's why..." But it's also possible that there's some squish room here. That's certainly the reality of publishing overall: while some projects have GOT to be done by a certain time in order to meet a given window of opportunity, many projects get rescheduled without sacrificing anything.

My point is simply that this talk of scuttling SO 2008 seems premature. I'm not, by the way, arguing for a later date per se. I'm just pointing out that if this DVD releases later than previous editions, people will still buy it, the Red Cross will still be benefited, the project will still achieve its humanitarian objective, and lots of viewers will still enjoy some spectacular, high-quality footage. So what's the panic? Why not just take the time required to get the right people in the right places, and then proceed from there?

Bob,

If we get a good marketing team then it won;t really matter because they would, well, do their part and find places to sell these. However, traditionally the greatest sales (60-80%) for all of the SOXXXX comes from the Holiday Purchasing. I think SO2007 may have broken that tradition only because I had a good group of people helping me with showings and other gigs.

So this means to meet that deadline the following will need to happen.

1.) We need to have the major players on on this project to step forward by 8/30/08.

2.) Once that takes place we will start having all of the chapter producers start gathering footage from folks. This will give the chapter producers 30 days to gather all their material.

3.) By October 1st the chapter producers will need to start on their chapters. I am sure the chapters will need to be completed at least by the third week of October. Believe me although the chapter do take time we will not have a May 4th 2007 on the SO2008 DVD so you will be able to make a three week deadline depending on your schedule.

4.) This allows the lead editor and the audio editor to have at least two to three weeks to do their magic.

5.) If we want to make Holiday sales we will need to have the final DVD to the replication house at least by 11/15/08. This gives them 10-15 days to do what the replication house needs to do.

I hope this helps... If not please let me know.

Also Bob, I have not forgotten to call you. I will try my best to get with you this weekend once I am away from work.

BTW: I am almost sure we have a taker on the Lead Editor. To be named tomorrow I hope...

So this means that if you are interested in producing a chapter please let us know. I know that many of you have already posted here that you would be interested in producing a chapter Tony is taking note of that and we will post the chapters and producers for each chapter on this thread.

Thanks,

Mick

Good evening,

I have video edited and can be sent in via DVD (Sd AVI format) when this project gets going.

I have a video preview page in case anyone is interested (for my main chase trip in 2008) at the link below...

http://www.sky-chaser.com/mwcl08b.htm#VIDEOX

The sample videos are exactly what the AVI's are in (just lower res real media).

Other chases in 2008 can be seen at the links below as well...

http://www.sky-chaser.com/mwcl2008.htm#VIDEOX

And even WINTER weather (Lake-Effect Blizzard and 15' waves on lake Michigan) below...

http://www.sky-chaser.com/levid1.htm

If you guys need anything for Storms of '08, feel free to ask me.

Thanks,

That makes sense. I'm really pleased to hear that you've got a candidate for lead editor, and hope that the concerns raised will soon become a thing of the past. I agree, though, that the marketing team can make all the difference.

Out of curiosity, has the SO series been sold at Skywarn trainings? Seems like good opportunity for a partnership, if someone hasn't already thought of it.

There's a reason we offered the Storms Of 2004-2008 at Project Greensburg back on March 1 and we sold exactly 79 copies of 2007 and only one each of the other three. People want what's current. Pushing the sales of SO 2008 well into 2009 will effectively kill its potential, especially if the 2009 season gets active early. Even though it's charity, you still have to be crafty with the marketing. If the SO 2008 doesn't come out until February of 2009, that means we get about 4 months before people start pining for a 2009 version. It's becoming more work than it's worth for the chasers involved...otherwise they'd be lining up and fighting over who gets to do what on the next one. Instead, we have pages upon pages of people beckoning folks to take over.

IMO, it should've been ended by the original creators the moment they realized they (no longer) wanted any part of it and, at the same time, had no one lined up to take over.

So far, I've taken note of four possible-probable chapter producers. Just to reiterate what Mick has already said, the August 30th deadline is essential in order to have the DVD out by the (typically) most profitable holiday season.

If you are interested in being a chapter editor, you can say so in this thread, or notify by PM or cell.

So Tony does this mean you are the lead producer? If so that's great!

I know this project has had it's fits and starts and grumblings but I think with all of us helping out we can pull it together.

I would like to produce the May 22nd west-central Kansas chapter. Anyone with footage from this day please PM me so that I can get it going.

thanks!
Verne

Yes, I am the lead producer. And if all goes well, Mick will be announcing the lead editor today. :)

I bought Storms of 2007 at the workshop in Norman.....DVD wouldn't work in any machine (tried 5). Tried to get a replacement DVD...and Mick came to my rescue . Thankyou.... and I would not mind contributing footage either.......among various other tornadoes... I have exclusive media footage of the McAlester Oklahoma tornado from this spring.....15 minutes footage with a second funnel almost overhead...............
