Good day all,

This is somewhat related to my laptop experience (link is below) but raises a few questions about SOFTWARE.

Laptop Thread is: http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18980

I am considering going with Vista, but planning to keep my tools and software up to date to run with such.

Has anyone had issues / success with the software below (on Vista 64)?

How about Vista 32 bit?

If not, what was the issue?

If so, what versions DID work, most imprtantly on 64-Bit Vista?

1). SwiftWx

2). Baron WX Works

3). Delorme Street Atlas / GPS (USB)

4). Adobe Premiere / Vegas Pro

5). MS Visual Basic

6). GR Levelx

7). Sierra USB 881 Wireless 3G card (At&t)

8). Corel Photo Paint

9). Windows FTP Client (WS FTP)

10). Arwil Avast Anti-Virus

Any input / opinions on these will help myself and others as 99% of non-Mac / non-Linux (aka Microsoft) is moving away from XP Pro.

Honestly??? if you can go with xp, I think you would spend a little less of your computing power on the OS. Vista takes a bit more soup to run than XP. Since some of the weather apps can be taxing if you run a bunch of them. (gr level3, spotter network, internet connection software, video streaming, streets and trips.... you get the point).
It's not that I haven't gotten just about all of those working on a vista system... I just don't want to waste any computing resources on an operating system than I have to.

On Vista 32bit, I can vouch for 1, 3, 4 (Adobe Premiere), 6, and 9

3 (with a Bluetooth GPS) I have tested on 32 bit and 8 (Paint Shop Pro) is fine on both 32 and 64 bit. The only issues I have had with 64 bit are hardware compatibility. I haven't come across any software that didn't work that wasn't the result of a driver issue.

What version of Visual Basic? Old school 6.0? Not Visual Studio?

Chris, since I know your running 2006 version of DeLorme I will speak to that exact edition. I have had no issues, but it may bulk on the first install. Just try again, it should be fine.

I'm sure your AT&T card should work fine since that is pretty new. I also will say that GRlevel3 and GRanalyst work fine.

To qualify the above, I'm running Vista Home Premium....so whatever bit version that is. If necessary I can try it on my mom's laptop which is Vista Basic.

If you want I can put you in contact with Aaron (from the Gustav Hurricane Intercept) if you want to compare notes on install solutions. He's also one of the testers for Windows 7.

Number 10 works with Vista 64. I have all the GRx software and it works great on Vista 64. DA also works well. I have 4GB ram... the more the better.

I have/use PaintShopPro as well, and I run it on Xp 64. It isn't supposed to work on Xp 64; but it does! The only program that I am aware of that doesn't run on Xp 64 - is flash player. But I haven't updated it yet - either. I understand there is a Xp 64 update for it - and I haven't updated yet. That'll take two minutes or less...

You might want to reconsider #3 (Delorme GPS) if you're wanting to share your GPS between apps using GpsGate or something similar. The Delorme LT-40 works great on Vista 64-bit, as well as GR3. However, I've hit a dead end trying to share the GPS as Delorme doesn't provide virtual device drivers for 64-bit Vista (you may be fine if you go 32-bit). So I've ordered a Garmin, should be here soon... I'll let you know how it goes.
