Time to address the questions
I am getting a ton of questions regarding the 5D Mark II and how much longer it’s going to be a current camera. While I obviously have nothing definitive, there are been a few pieces of information come my way in regards to a Canon roadmap.

5D Mark III

  • A Q2/Q3 announcement in 2011, this is not yet decided within Canon.
  • Big megapixel boost, 28mp +
  • Continue to build on EOSHD and supreme image quality.
  • A variant of the 7D AF system.
  • I can’t see them not calling it 5D Mark III, the 5D name carries a lot of weight.
  • Expect it to be in the same $2699 range the 5D Mark II was at launch.
  • Obvious ergonomic upgrades.
I get asked a lot if people are safe to buy a 5D Mark II now. The answer is “yesâ€￾, it’s a great camera today and it’ll still be a great camera in a year.
There is not a lot of urgency for Canon & Nikon to launch new higher end cameras in the current economic climate. Things look to improve in 2011. The 5D Mark II also still sells extremely well.

If the same cost....I'd be glad I didn't buy yet. But realistically, the 5D is so good....I'd be OK with just using that. Besides....if the 5D MkIII comes out, it'll also likely mean a drop in used 5D pricing....which may be a bonus!

Yet another round of feature churn. Zzzzzzzzz......

How will any of these 'improvements' make your photographs any better?

I'm not sure about the feature set on the Mk3, but the mk2 was a ground breaking camera. I agree that a camera won't improve basic photography skills, but it has enabled me to create images that weren't at all possible with my 30d. An example is something like this:

This image was shot at ISO 3200 and 20 seconds with a 20mm prime at F2.8. On my 30D, the noise would have made the image unusable, and the ISO sensitivity never would have picked up the Milky Way.

Along with amazing noise control, the ability to shoot 1080P video is a huge deal, assuming you have access to high quality lenses. Add to that lens micro adjustments, an automatic lens adjustment database in the camera, a dust vibration system, etc etc.

You should check out some of the time lapse work on this site:

This one in particular is amazing:

Most of these folks are using either a 5dmk2 or a 7d for their awesome noise control. I keep wondering how much further the envelope can be pushed with mid/high range DSLRs. I think we'll see more in-camera HDR features, as well as in camera HDR videos maybe. I know what you are getting at with your comments, and I agree that the feature churn in cameras can seem kind of rediculous. However, some of the things being done are pretty awesome.

I heard the 5DmkIII would have a touch screen, Built in wifi and GPS, 4K resolution HD video, 5 stop AEB (auto exposure bracketing) instead of +/- 2stops and best yet, direct uploads to youtube

Just kidding

Actually, I am pretty happy with my 5DmkII. I would like a 7D or 60D to upgrade my 30D since I don't want to carry my 5D to work with me. Other them some good weather sealing on the 5DmkII and maybe slightly faster auto focus, I think its still a great camera
