REPORTS & PICS: 1/28/10 Southern Plains Winter Storm

  • Thread starter Thread starter Jason Boggs
  • Start date Start date
I've posted a couple images on my Facebook page as well as my blog. Visibility is 100 yards at best in town... Hwy 287 in town complete white out. I'm going to attempt a snow measurement... I would estimate 4-6" of snowfall so far given the amount of trampling I've done in drifts and whatnot.

18z

As Brian mentioned we are still getting almost all FRZR here in Cordell, OK. Most sufaces now have 1/2" and greater amounts of glazing. We are getting a few IP pellets mixed in which I hope is the continued trend. Going by the 17z SPC mesoanalysis, it appears the 850mb freezing line is now south of a Cheyenne to Ponca City line. As it progresses south, we should see a complete change-over to IP within the next couple hours. This will be a welcome change because I'm not looking forward to sitting in the dark.

1845z Update: Now we're seeing almost all IP. And it looks that 1/2" is going to be our final ice total. :D

We are up to about .2" of ice on the trees as of 12:00pm CST in Norman. At that time, most of the precip was falling as freezing rain with only a few sleet pellets (90% freezing rain, 10% sleet).

The above image is an extreme case. Most surfaces don't have that much ice on them yet.

EDIT: Light freezing rain was falling at 2:00pm CST. Moderate freezing rain was falling by 2:15pm CST (still 90% freezing rain and 10% sleet). There is now .3" of ice on the trees.

Still just a sleet storm here in Miami. We have about a half inch covering the ground. I am still hopeful it will change to snow soon. I am hearing that AMA area has gotten up to almost 6 inches, but they are now about to get the dry slot, so that may be about it. I am still hoping for at least a few inches here before it ends.

Anyone have any idea on why the KAMA radar will not display anything over about 30 dBz (yellow or greater)? I think precipitation heavier than that is occurring but its just not displayed.

Update: FINALLY! Its going over to snow here. Huge wet snowflakes, and lots of them!

Wow it is 28 degrees here in Tahlequah. That was the forecasted low!! Also the high here was supposed to be 37 but it only hit 33. Ice is starting to build. I see icicles forming on stop signs. sleet:rain ratio is 1:10 drops. Im about to head to the store and get a 60 pack, and head home... I have a feeling overnight I am going to be hearing alot of "gun shots" going off (cracking trees). Oh btw the RUC doesnt really look like its handling the dry slot in the tx pahandle to well? We have a decent band of 30-35 dbzs.

Update in Dumas. Snowfall rate is very high still... probably 1.5-2" hour rates still. Easily 7" if not more on the level. Lots of long one-foot drifts and sporadic 2 to 2.5 foot drifts against cars and buildings. Looks like the dry slot is trying to fill back in south of AMA. I think we'll see our Foot on the level here by 5pm.

Here east of Norman near Lake Thunderbird at 1:30 pm it's 28.3F. It's mostly wet outside but a thin coating of ice is developing everywhere and tree limbs are now starting to sound crinkly in the wind. A few spots on our sidewalk are slippery. I would check on power lines if I could but they're all buried in our subdivision.

1:24 pm CST, east of Norman:

Precip type is ZR- to ZR--.

If you all can continue to report on observed precip type, it would be a great help for a lot of people. ASOS and mesonet are not very good for differentiating type, and it's really critical in this event, especially out west.

From my POV in Norman (2 miles E of the NWC) the power lines are starting to get a glaze on them. Nothing significant yet...but as the event continues, I'm sure it will get there.

The precip has now turned to ALL snow here in Miami, TX, and we're now receiving heavy snow. The true transition finally occurred between 1 and 1:30pm here. It was a lot of fun to watch. We now have about an inch of snow on top the 1/2 in of sleet.

The dry intrusion has really damaged the precip pattern in the TX panhandle, but as Mike U. pointed out, there appears to be a reattempt S of AMA. If this can get organized, we may still eek out a few more inches here. Will just have to see. Good job Mike! Dumas is the place to be! (for snow anyways :)

A few slick spots on my porch and driveway here in far North Edmond. Going back out in a bit to see how things are going.
