REPORTS & PICS: 1/28/10 Southern Plains Winter Storm

  • Thread starter Thread starter Jason Boggs

Small branches are starting to break off of the trees. Wind has picked up in the past 30 minutes as well.

Jim Leonard was scheduled to fly into OKC today, but his flight was canceled and he is stuck in Houston.

Since the freezing rain/sleet transition, it has been snowing at least moderately since 1:00pm today in Miami, TX. Currently we have heavy snow and have about 3 in of snow/sleet on the ground. You can barely make out the mesa just south of my house, which is at most 1/8 mi away.

The snow is not purely in the form of flakes. It is a very grainy snow, with little fluffiness. It appears there is a lot of sleet still mixing in with the snowflakes. That is undoubtedly robbing from what otherwise might be a pretty good snow depth.

Here are a couple of photos from today:

Power outages in the Purcell/Pauls Valley area appear to be creeping north into the Norman area. OG&E lists 2000 customers without power in Norman but is not specific at all where. We heard a family friend in the rural northeast side is without power. The OKC metro still appears in good shape.

EDIT: OG&E de-listed the Norman outage just now... I guess that's good news.

Here's what it looks like a little east of Norman. We changed over completely to sleet around 3 pm, and it's covered everything with a pretty solid blanket, about half an inch deep. I don't know about road conditions but we'd probably be stuck here at the house without the tire chains. No power interruptions at all here.... we're drying laundry and my son is playing Little Big Planet on the PS3.

Norman, the sleet capital of the world....

Bright banding is usually a circle around the radarsite, which tells you the level that melting is occurring. It's not a band of precip that moves through...
