Ice, sleet and snow in southern Logan County, Ok

Ice, sleet and snow in the trees in southern Logan County, Ok. I do not think we got it as bad as the people living south and southeast of Oklahoma City. I know in southwest Oklahoma about 50 miles down I 44 they got hit hard.

6 inches here In south Central Butler County, Kansas.

Here in SE Tulsa/Broken Arrow OK, after receiving about 1/2" of ice yesterday and this morning (mostly rz with scattered ip), changed to all snow about 10 a.m. Had moderate snow for 8 hours straight, with about an hour or two of heavy snow in the middle of that. Ended up with 6 inches of snowfall. Very pretty here now! Note in the pictures below, the long icicles were from the rz before the snow started.

Ended up with a powdery 1" here in OP...3-5 inches south of here about 30 miles. Light snow slowly winding down. Not much of a winter storm this far north. Dry air won the battle.

Was out around the Purcell/Maysville/ish area today surveying the damage. Was some power poles down along with the expected tree limb damage.

(As of this writing was still processing, should be good to go by morning for sure)

Saw ice accumulations on trees up to about 3/4" thick. Most averaged around 1/2" or so.

One enterprising individual in purcell was selling Generators at what appeared to be a rising premium.

I just got home from work and I'm amazed to say the least. I-40 has been opened for about 17 hours now, and semis are still lined up along the access road of I-40 on the east side of town. Also, a lot of semis are parked along loop 335 on the east side of town. I counted a loose estimate of about 50-60 rigs parked along said roads, and the truck stops are absolutely full. I counted a loose total of about 100-150 rigs in about a 3 mile span. I-40 is still a mess though, so I don't blame them for staying put for a while longer. I've never seen it this bad when I-40 was shut down, much less when it was opened back up. Crazy stuff....

The problem Jason is they really have nowhere to go. Its bad here but I-40 is a mess all the way through Oklahoma and eastward from there. Westbound gets better once you gets past Adrian. Not near as much snow and ice out in New Mexico. Heading south seems the only good option...lol. I think starting today they should clear out some and we will be back to normal semi traffic by tomorrow with highs in the 40s. Ofcourse each night all that melting will refreeze into pure ice so I would wait until midday before I hit the road. The airport is also suppose to open back up today after being closed for 2 days.

The drive into work today wasnt bad just slow. I-27 was packed ice/snow even though they have plowed a numerous times it still has a a good 2" layer of hard packed snow and it is very bumpy and divoted thanks to the road graters knobby tractor tires. Feels like a very bad dirt road. I though my truck was going to shake apart at times. I-40 is a bit smoother and at times almost down to pavement but still slick. 30-35mph at best safely. Lots of stuck cars still on side and residential roads. I stopped and pulled out 2 neighbors on my street on the way to work this morning. They were both driving sports cars. Mustangs and firebirds do NOT mix well with snow. Major roads have been plowed but the city in its stupidity always plows to the middle of the road leaving huge snowbanks in the turning lanes making it easy to get down the road but impossible to turn onto any side streets or parking lots. I know they are trying to keep the gutters clear for runoff but at least plow some breaks in there. Also TxDot needs to replow the exits and entrances instead of just the highway. getting on and off can be hazardous at best.

I left Dumas, TX at about 3:00am. I called the TxDOT hotline and it said that Hwy 54 was still closed from NM border to OK border... so I went north to Stratford anyway, understanding that I may have to backtrack slightly taking 287 northwest to Boise City before heading back into KS through Elkhart. When I got to Stratford, Hwy 54 was just closed going WEST into NM as it was barricaded there. The semis were lined up for at least two miles on the west-bound shoulder. Amazing!! I set up the tripod and took a couple night photos of this scene, and then continued on my way northeast to Guymon on a snow-packed highway with a top speed of 45 mph. After Guymon, highway was just dry from there to Dodge City.

Here are some images from Roberts, CO, TX after we received about 1/4in of ice, followed by about 1in of sleet, followed by about 6 in of snow, for a total of over 7in on January 28, 2010.

I ended up with about 6/10 of frz rain, 2/10 of sleet, and around 6 inches of snow. 6/10 is about the max we could have and not lose power. It went off and on a lot but it never was off for more than a few minutes.

More Pics Here

We ended up with just about 8.5" of snow in east Norman, on top of 1/2" sleet and 5/8" ice glaze. I measured 4" in two hours during the peak snowfall from about 3-5 pm on the 29th.
