Number of Posts???

I noticed that the number of posts that a ST'er posts is not there anymore. Is it a glitch, or has it been removed permanently? I think it would be a good thing to remove that so some ST'ers don't get intimidated? Any thoughts?

The moderators have reached a consensus to remove the post count. It doesn't really serve much of a purpose, and there was a concern that some members may worry about (or put too much into) their post count.

I liked it... It gave me a rough estimate of how often someone visits the forums. I think almost everyone here can agree that it wasn't used to be elitist.

I liked it to...but it's gone now. You can still view it by clicking on someones profile, however. What's the deal about being elite from your post counts, or something?

I also side with the moderators, it seemed that there has been an increase in a number of useless posts lately, I have a feeling this may cut back on that. As far as the concern of knowing how often one visits, I think those of us that visit the sight often recognize those who are regulars and even if you cant "who cares" one with 8,000 post might not have any better information then one with 20.

Yeah, I didn't see a problem with it... Also, it doesn't make any sense on why it was chosen to not display on it on the actual posts, but if you look at the memberlist or profiles - it's still there.

Once again, if there is a problem with useless posts - just get rid of them

It doesn't really matter what a persons post count is, it's about how much they contribute to this forum (forecasting, reports, techniques, etc)...

Exactly...

Anyway, I HIGHLY doubt that it will cut back on "useless" posts. I often check my post ratio to make sure it's within the ST guidelines, and I have a pretty good ratio (as does Nick and Jeff), and we have easily over 2,000 posts here, many of which aren't "useless". Given that, I don't believe it will cut back on useless posts.

Completely agreed...

There is absolutely no reason on why it would cut back on stupid posts, as they are gonna be posted anyways. Go take a look at all the WX-Group "mailing list" type things, there is plenty of dumb stuff going on - and there is no such thing as a "post count"...

I personally really wish it was back..just because it's been around for a while.

It doesn't matter either way, it's just that the arguments for taking it away are fairly slim - as noted by the lack of discussion/one-liners. As the saying goes; if it's not broken, then don't fix it.

As Glen said though, it is less clutter, and you can still check post counts by clicking on the name.

I liked it because I enjoy stats anyway, but it's no real loss because the posts you read still have a name attached. The names you start recognizing are the ones with the highest number of posts. With or without the post count, the most active people will still be easy to spot.

Also interesting to note that, while perusing the other replies in this thread, the two individuals who are compaigning for the post count display were at the top of the post list

As for "less clutter" - it won't solve much of that... There is still gonna be dumb "one-liner" posts or useless posters. It can't be solved until you simply put a stop to THAT.

Personally, I don't care - I'm just sayin'...

At some point it must have come back, since I still see it. I'm convinced that if it were possible to get rid of the count, it would eliminate the competition to post more.

And, now that I've fallen to 78th place in this competition...I'm going to have a hard time catching up.

I f I post in this topic as to a favored thought or a non-favored thought will this still be considered a useless post? Since it has already been ruled by mods are all the post above useless?

No offense hopefully is taken but what some call useless others do not and vice versa ......

My opinion on the subject is, so what

Whatever floats the moderators boat is fine with me. I have noticed that some of the people who haven't been members very long are climbing the charts rather quickly on post counts and the vast majority of their posts are frivolous IMO. Maybe doing away with the post count will help keep worthless posts down. I guess it just depends on what motivates these people to post.

On the contrary, it could just make it harder to identify those with the frivolous post counts (i.e. someone with 1200 posts, but you rarely see them in the Target Area or Weather Lab). I am just wondering who seriously has competitions on post counts here in ST? If there really are people who are posting frivolously just to rank higher, then they shouldn't be here in the first place, and they shouldn't be that hard to spot (i.e. look at the post ratios).

If it quacks like a duck....

(Yes! I just took over sole possession of 77th place!)

There are a few new members who have posted dramatically since joining - and many of the posts make no sense or are invaluable. Seriously, even after this restructuring - not much has changed with the quality of posts...

In absolutely no way am I knocking down ST, but I am just making a point here. Instead of getting rid of post counts, just get rid of the useless post/posters. There is plenty of mods on the board

Just so you know...invaluable is the same as valuable. Just like flammable and inflammable, those both mean something is likely to catch fire.

I'd like to stick up for ST here. I have never found a more structured, quality forum on the internet. At least, not for anything I've been interested in. Has anybody ever checked out the Wright Weather forum, for example? Its a cluster of frantic posting, aliases, and endless topics. Everytime a cloud pops up somebody starts a thread.

As for the post count, I don't care. A little dissapointed though since I am 2 away from 1000.

A while back somebody brought up the idea of some sort of rating system where members can rank other members posts. I think this is the only way that you are going to do away with frivolous posts. Cracking down on the frivolous posters just isn't going to happen because it's arbitrary and nobody(moderators) wants to be the whistle blower. If you had a rating system, you could bring back the post count and stick the cumulative rating underneath it. A high post count with a low rating would make you look like a real jackass. Problem solved.

I agree with Michael Gribble. Would it be possible to put the ratio's up, or have some sort of rating system? I'd have no problem with that.

But then as Bill stated... ST is one of the HIGHEST quality forums out there, if not the highest quality. Heck, I'm even registered at various private investment group forums and business forums, and they don't even have the structure that ST has. While other forums consist of mostly frivolous posts, spammers, and pure idiots, at least on ST that group is by large the minority.
