*New Users. Meet and Greet Area*

Howdy all. I'm Brody Flavin, I live in Newton, KS (about 30 mins north of Wichita on I135). I'm a 911 dispatcher for Harvey County (Newton) and try to help spot storms when I have the time. I'd like to start learning more about the weather and forecasting - if anyone has any tips on where to start, or if anyone in the Wichita area wants to meet up sometime, lemme know.

Thanks!

Hey Brody! Welcome to ST. If you want to learn, this is the place to be. Feel free to ask away and shoot anyone of us a PM.

Hey Brody, welcome to Stormtrack. I am going to try not to sound like a salesperson, but have you tried becoming a member of the Wichita Chapter of the AMS/NWA? I joined in March of this year and have learned a lot so far. If you have any questions about it just give me a PM and I will get you that info.

Hello everyone. My name is Matt, I am a Junior at Missouri State University. I got a chance to end the 08' season on a good note. We spent the 26th and 27th chasing. I held up in McAlester Oklahoma hoping the CAP would give on Friday evening. However, dry air was pulled in aloft from the SW that reinforced the CAP. I think it had to do with the positive tilt of the jet. The low level jet veered a bit to the SW as it entered oklahoma. Surface winds were out of the south and aloft winds were strong out of the SW from 700mb up to 300 mb. This helped to break up the cloud deck and let the sunshine bring record warmth, however unfortunately the dry air aloft held back development. We did manage to intercept an embedded supercell along a line segment in NE Oklahoma. We intercepted this cell as it crossed into Missouri near Anderson in Barry County. I recorded a 67 mph FFD wind gust, as well as video of a shear funnel along the FF and a wall cloud. It was brief, the storm was tracking ENE at near 80mph. Anyway, we had alot of fun. I look forward to chatting with everyone this season, and I wish you all the best of luck.

Severe Weather

Looks like everything will be quiet until later into January. The one thing about winter that makes it so difficult is the lack of daylight.

Hello!

Hey everyone, my name is David Anderson, but you can just call me DJ if you want (everyone else does). Right now I am a sophomore meteorology student attending Western Illinois University, hoping to one day become a forecaster for the NWS. Whether I reach that high on the ladder, I don't really know, but even if I don't I will certainly love whatever I do, as long as it pertains to weather, haha.

Welcome to ST! :D If you ever have a question about something for a class there is probably someone here who can answer it.

Brand new to forum, just wanted to say hello! I am taking classes in Emergency Management! I am interested in becoming a storm chaser!

Just got approved and excited to be in the company of weather enthusiasts.
Have shopped around and found this site/forum to be the most in depth on severe weather on the internet. I am nearing retirement(May18) as a train conductor(freight service) and will finally have time to fly out and join the storm tours, something I've wanted to do for years but never had time. Plus here in SC, if someone mentions MESOcyclone they think hurricane. We just don't have the dynamics as you do out west. And I might add no horizon.
Thanks for having me aboard.
