Matt Hughes passes away

This Wednesday on Storm Chasers will feature Matt Hughes last chase. In honor of his legacy, I'm asking that TOGETHER we find 1,000 people to donate just $10 to the memorial fund set up for his sons. With your help of spreading the word, I believe we can meet the goal

Thanks for sharing the info about donating to the memorial fund.

I am still praying for Matt's family and friends. Truly a tragedy.

Years ago, I too was extremely depressed. I had pushed the people that cared for me away and wanted to take my life. I've heard it said that people who are depressed and say nothing are the ones to really listen to. After a lot of counseling, I was back on track. The point I want to make is for people to really know their friends and family. Know when they are truly happy and when it's just for the moment. Be able to read body language as well. Depression is serious whether it's a chemical thing or caused by other factors. If anybody ever needs to talk, I will most certainly listen.

My prayers of comfort and strength go out to Matt's family and friends.

I want to start by saying my thoughts and prayers go out to Matt and all who were close to him.

I have this idea to help raise money for the memorial fund but don't have the know how or equiptment to pull it off. I was thinking it would be nice to pull together a bumper sticker with some type "in memory of" saying or somethig like that on it. Most chasers have stickers on their vehicles and I think it would be a good way to show support and raise money at the same time. If anyone out there could pull it off I think that would be great.

Thanks for the address, Chris!

Hello all,

Wow. I guess I've been living in a bubble. Since I just have a TV antenna to get TV, I don't get The Discovery Channel or see Storm Chasers, and I guess I need to read ST more often to see these important announcements. My condolences, albeit very belated, to Matt Hughes family. May God comfort them, even as they watched his final storm chase.

I would like to know how much was raised by this effort. I sent in my donation a few days ago. I will keep his family in my prayers.

Jeff

I think that is up to the trustees of the fund. Not sure they'd release the amount to the public. But I'm not sure.

Was VERY glad to see this come out, address the issue, and provide information pertinent to those who may need help. This was my only beef with the whole situation.

One of the managers I work with was a meteorology student, and still has a love of the weather. He came to me after last weeks episode aired because that was how he found out about Matt passing. We talked for a while, and he told me that his wife had really struggled with depression for several years early on in their marriage.....I told him about the inner demons I had fought for so many years.....

The reason I am posting this is.....Matts family will never know how many people reached out and -started talking- because of what happened to Matt. Them releasing the statement they did, you just never know how many people will be helped by that....

Watch out for one another....

If one good thing came out of this is that people can be more aware and get a better understanding that depressed people aren't "crazy". There is solid scientific proof to the causes of depression and signs that now can be watched to determine if someone is heading down that lonely road.
I had never experienced true depression until my father passed away several years ago. I was fine through the whole funeral/service, but days after everyone had gone, I found myself crying uncontrollably for days on end driving home from work. I though to myself, "this isn't right" chalking it up to just missing my dad... After weeks of not wanting to do anything, go anywhere, not talking to anyone, and just curling up in bed, i finally went to see the doctor, who turned out to be a real good listener. He knew my pass history with anxiety and panic issues so he gt me on meds and that striaghten me out. Now I know the signs to look for...
This whole issue of depression is not a black magic voodoo issue. It's real and better yet, can be dealt with very well.....
I now have a much better understanding of the issue when people talk about depression.....

Good day all,

I see the tribute and "truth" to the public from Matt's family. I think it took a lot courage and caring to post such a thing.

The Discovery channel initially stated "killed in an accident at his home in Kansas" in the previous shows. We all (or MOST of us) know that that was not the case, but suicide, especially from depression, can sometimes be seen as a shameful and inordinately tragic thing. I fully understand why at first this may have been very difficult.

Now the truth is out, and not only can the "general public" be aware of depression, but also know that it can happen to ANYONE - Pilots, storm chasers, celebrities, homeless people, atheletes, even doctors - It's a sickness, and it can affect anyone - regardless of lifestyle or profession.

God bless Matt's family, himself, and others for being strong enough to help make him (and his legacy) make a difference.
