International novice looking for advice

Gal Sherbelis

I am planning on Especially traveling to the USA in May – June to take an organized storm chasing tour.

I have two questions:
1. Is 2011 going to be a particularly poor year for chasing at these months?
2. What date (assuming I going to spend 7-10days) should I pick?

I know weather predictions and forward weather predictions are very very tricky but if I am to go I will have to set a date. I will be happy to hear any opinion, tip or advice on the matter.

Really it is nearly impossible this early to say yes that May will be good or bad. Although May is the peak of the season being here during that month does not guarantee a successful chase vacation. If you are going to pick anytime of May I would put my money on the 22nd but once again this early in the year its like being blindfolded and throwing darts at a board. If you get a dart in the bullseye it is purely by luck.

Thanks Bart,

Well I am learning what I have to ask….

At what time do you think it is possible to give better prediction? I do not want to hold the booking too late and on the other hand I do not want to go in a particularly bad year.

The middle two weeks of may sometimes turn out to be ideal, maybe even toward the latter part of May... This year the earlier part of May was busier too, but there was a high risk on May 19th, and then a nice tornado day May 22nd..

It all depends on how much you are willing to travel, once in the USA.. Its probable that you should be able to find some sort of interesting weather, somewhere in the plains during that time.

The longer your tour is you have more of a chance of seeing tornadoes. So if you can afford it go for two weeks (well I guess 10 days). The downside/upside depending on your financial state to this is you will become "hooked" on chasing here in the states guaranteed :).

I would say early May.I just had the same problem this past year.My team had a filmer from England come over and follow us for his documentary "Weathermen".We had him in Oklahoma from very late April through May 10.We had 6 or 7 chase days in that time. One of which was a high risk.So I would say early through mid May.

And I agree with Andy,10 days would be good.
