Thanks Darren! Also, just for reference, the B&W Gradiant conversion method is use is the same as this one:

It can be applied to any color photograph, and is generally the last step I do (although sometimes after conversion you can do a final levels to increase the contrast a bit more).

To me, B&W really shines with lots of contrast between the white and dark areas of the image. Not all images work well in B&W, but IR really seems to work well.

Great stuff Ryan! What is on the top of the hill? Almost looks like a radar dome. I also like the train depot. We didn't see that when we were there a few years ago.

Thanks, James! It is indeed a radar dome. I don't know much about it, but quoting from Wikipedia:

Operated by NATS the station is a key part of the Air Traffic Control system for the North Atlantic area. A dome containing a PSR and SSR, various towers and fencing crown the summit. Alfred Wainwright abhors this radar station in his book Pennine Way Companion.

That train depot is actually in Jersey City -- when you go to buy tickets for the Ellis Island boat, just turn around -- that's the depot behind you.

Ryan - #3 is EXCELLENT. I've kinda been forced to do some black and white stuff in my photography class, but nothing digital since the class is over film, which is stupid, I mean who shoots 35mm film anymore?!? I could understand large format or something, but 35? Haven't learn anything in that class yet either, except how to waste $500 on film supplies.

here is a photo of a storm ( May 5, 2001 in SW OK, it later produced a tornado near Cordell ) , took it originally in colour slide but I like it more in b/w... and when I switch to a negative image it looks cool, like a pyroclastic exploding volcano in a winter snowy field . ;-)

That's a great black and White shot Olivier! The negative doesn't do much for me. ;-)

These looked best in black and white since almost all the photos I took that day were black, white and grey toned. Black and white is neat as it can give a retro look. I love old b/w storm photos because it looks so eerie..
