Icelandic Volcano effect on Temp

Krakatoa lowered world temperatures for years , i pose the question ....Will the ash being spewed into the atmosphere by the volcano in iceland effect temperatures in the northern hemisphere ?, i understand of course that this is a much smaller eruption but if it keeps erupting surely it will impact on the heating available for this storm season.

Al Gore will say it is lending to global warming or he invented it.

I don't think it will have much of an impact on the temps in Gulf of Mexico though.

The eruption of Krakatoa was a VEI (volcanic explosivisity index) 6 eruption. In that it ejected more than 10 cubic kilometers of ash. The eruption occuring on Iceland probably wont be anywhere near Krakatoa's. Pinatubo had an affect on the Earth's climate as well, and it was a VEI 6. Tambora was a 7 and it caused the year without a summer in 1815.

Couple of points to mention; the Eyjafjallajokull volcano is at a high latitude in the Northern Hemisphere..volcanoes located in Iceland can a much higher impact on the weather than volcanoes in the tropics as a number of stuides have shown. (Some studies have shown just the opposite..as might be expected-different locations around the World are affected different based on the location of the volcano.) Having said that, this particular volcano doesn't have much sulfur in it and isn't generally producing much emissions above 30,000 feet which is the critical threshold for having climate effects.

More importantly, the melting of the glacier and removing all that weight from the summit of the nearby Katla caldera may cause that volcano to erupt sometime in the next year or so. (This scenario has happened several times before.)

That volcano is huge and has a much much higher chance of altering the World's climate.

"When Katla went off in the 1700s, the USA suffered a very cold winter," says Gary Hufford, a scientist with the Alaska Region of the National Weather Service. "The Mississippi River froze just north of New Orleans, and the East Coast, especially New England, had an extremely cold winter. Depending on a new eruption, Katla could cause some serious weather changes.""

No there won't be any noticeable climatic impact from this volcano. Compared to volcanoes that actually had an impact, this eruption was tiny.

The current eruptions of Eyjafjallajokull very likely not, but if the nearest bigger volcanos Hakla and Katla explode, then thats another story...

Not to sound alarmist but I am waiting on its big brothers to erupt then we have a huge problem. It would have an impact not only on temps but sunlight which will lead to food shortages and possibly anarchy. air travel will come to a standstill for months and it will cause the global economy to fall back into a deep recession just as we are starting to come out of it. To be honest it could be a major worldwide disaster if they do erupt.

Ofcourse then we would have to have new treaties and plans to deal with global cooling. I am sure Gore would have some ideas..lol
