Ice Storm- OK/MO/AR/TX/KY

I measured about 1/2" of sleet out in the back yard of the apartment complex here on the south side of Norman. From the ice on some tree branches, I'd estimate we had about 1/4" of ice. Thank goodness it wasn't a repeat of Dec '07. I feel for the folks out east...that's not a fun experience.

I just measured about 3" of sleet here in Shawnee. The trees survived since it was mostly sleet. Roads are bad. I went out for a little while and didn't see any sand trucks. I did see a couple of crazy drivers just asking to wreck their cars.
I fear what it will be like tomorrow when the roads melt and then re-freeze as solid ice.

3 inches of freezing rain in spots. I can't imagine what that's like

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS HAS BEEN THE
HARDEST HIT SO FAR WITH ICE ACCUMULATIONS ON ELEVATED SURFACES
EXCEEDING 2 INCHES IN SOME PLACES. POWER OUTAGES ARE WIDESPREAD
ACROSS THE NORTHERN PART OF THE MID SOUTH AND EXCEED 75 PERCENT IN
RANDOLPH AND CLAY COUNTIES. SOMESPOTS WILL END UP WITH NEARLY 3 INCHES OF I ON ELEVATED SURFACES

I'm in Santa Fe (where we just had flurries), not Edwardsville, but it appears that most of the STL area has had around 5-6 inches of snow, with some sleet mixed in early on in some areas. A few spots are getting close to 7 inches. There are reports of more than 3 inches of sleet in some areas south of the STL metro; up to around 4 in a few spots.

Expecting a good 5-11 inches total snowfall here in the Canton area. Already have a couple on the ground with sleet mixing in. Dont see a dry slot developing as of yet, as is usually the case with storms in Ohio.

We have been without power for 16 hours now... have gas so its not too bad. We are using vehicle for electricity when we get too bored. We are extremely lucky as our temp rose during the heavy rain to about 32.5. We probably got 1.5 inches of rain at around that temp. We still ended up with about .75 or freezing rain accum and then another 1/4 inch of sleet/snow as it ended. I think the heavy rain must have brought down some of the warmer air aloft and the rain itself probably raised the temps a bit as well. I will post pics later sometime. I may try and get up to one of the areas with the 3 inch ice accumulations reports (elevated areas of Newton County AR) if the roads clear off some and trees down block the way.

6 inches here in Southwest St. Louis County and it looks like a stripe from Jefferson County, MO into Illinois is 8 inches plus.

This isn't a really big storm for us but I'm guessing that the economy has taken some snow plows off the road or something. Roads were terrible yesterday when we only had 3 inches on the ground and the 5 or more we received overnight has just damaged the rush hour commute. My own street which is normally plowed twice during the night hasn't even been touched yet.

Hurm....

The snow stopped at around 1 thismorning, and since then we've had just about nothing except sleet and freezing rain. Everything outside is iced over. Thankfully the power lines dont have a lot on them.

Ended up w/ 3-5" snow depending on exact location here in extreme SE KS. Of course this fell on top of the 1-2" of sleet. Really no ice to speak of, its there, but 1/4" at most. I was told at the ER today that Jasper/Newton Co. Missouri had 300 wrecks reported in a 4 hour period on Monday. Wow. Just stay home.

Having lived in Northeast Arkansas I would say some of the rural areas may be without power for over a month. People live in places over there that are hard to reach on a bright sunny day.

Didn't get a lot here in North Central Texas, but even a thin accretion of ice makes the parking lot look like an ice skater's dream: images taken this morning (1/28/09).

Here in Festus, MO which is about 35 miles south of St.Louis in Jefferson County we recieved a total of 8 inches (4 sleet,4 snow). Working nights both days of this event made for some interesting driving. I know ice is worse but driving in 4 inches of sleet can be interesting, it reminded me of driving in sand. Then put 4 inches of snow on top of it and it really gets fun. Thank god for 4 wheel drive.

, according to Jim Cross.

What people forget: you can't drive on ice. The ice drives YOU, unless you have a Zamboni. Reports of over 500 wrecks this morning in North Central Texas.

I have a cane. Think I'm getting out on that? Nope.

Just spoke with Heidi. she reports 2+ inches of ice, 1 inch of sleet, and 1 inch of snow on top of all that. 300,000 folks w/out power in Arkansas!! Her & Rick are doing ok, no damage to their home or vehicles but trees all over are destroyed!! All these folks need our thoughts & prayers!!
