So in case you have not heard, GoPRO has announced the Hero3. 3 models, white, silver and the kick a$$ Black. The wifi is built into all three of them, and a special feature, with the wifi, you can start, stop, off, on, and many other features from an iphone or ipad with the free app. You can even view the image on your mobile device. Android version "coming soon". Black will do 4K video. Battery looks larger, but did not find any specs on battery life. GoPRO says availability of the Black will be around Thanksgiving. I think there is going to be a ton of these on Christmas lists.

I've already seen several chasers tweet about it in anticipation... including myself. Key features for many are the better low light and built-in wifi for the image viewing. Can't wait to get my hands on one!

I got a Hero 3 Black for Christmas. I'm planning on doing some tests with it today. Anyone have much experience with this camera yet? The test videos I've seen look pretty good. I'm very interested in any streaming applications people have come up with.

Ive got a Black and loving the WIFI feature to the iPad. The wifi does eat more battery. Also the streaming to my iPad does as well. I have added the additional batter to help this. Cant wait to get a bunch of these and be able to start and stop recording and power down remotely to save battery life. Anyone know how many I can control from a single iPad??

As advertised, the app should let you control up to 50.

I originally had the Hero first version -- but sold it due to the lack of any seamless remote option.

Just got the Hero3 which seems to have solved my earlier gripe. Hoping this can clear out the bulky video camera windshield mounts as I intend to mount the Hero3 externally and flip (using the iOS app) on when things get interesting.

One note, since it is WiFi to connect to the Hero3, my data becomes the iPhone signal rather than my near unlimited data/WiFi. Not a big deal given its flexibility.

Also looking forward to other innovations people create with this camera.

LOVE my gopro! I bought the handle bar mount and I mount it to the cross bar on my roof rack. Its great up there! Just bought the WIFI so I can turn it off and on in the car to save the battery. The iphone app for the wifi bac even gives you a preview to make sure you are aimed right

I LOVE IT

Anyone care to go into detail about how they have their GoPro's set up in their vehicle for chasing?

When I use mine as a dash cam, I have two separate mounts. One is the normal GoPro mount that I use when the GoPro is a dedicated, straight-forward dash cam. I also added velcro to one of the mounts and have a velcro pad on my dash so I have more flexibility in getting good camera angles. One of these days I'll actually go out and get a swivel mount.

As an aside, I also bought a 3/8" hot shoe adapter for my camcorder and I just place my second GoPro on that so I can get both the wide-angle and tight shots at the same time with one hand.

I know this thread has been dead for a month or two, but I use a GoPro 3 Black edition for auto racing and rally racing. I have used the suction cup on the outside of the car at speeds ~150mph and no issues at all. Even while rally racing at high speeds with rocks and gravel hitting the case, snow and ice were no issues either. It has held up well. I look forward using it this summer to catch weather.

I would recommend picking up a few extra battery packs though as I seem to only get about an hour and fifteen minutes out of mine.

In reading about the "Teradek VidiU" new wireless streaming device on the BHPhotoVideo site, I noticed that the single review is provided by SVP Media and includes a picture of their mobile setup using it with the GoPro as a chasing stringer for KWTV of OKC. The archived stream from their May 20th chase can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0wI_uNN1K8.

The VidiU seems a bit on the pricey side, but seems to be able to use the HDMI video out from a wide variety of cameras, including DSLRs and not need a computer as intermediary because it does the H.264 and AAC encoding right in the box. It also claims to allow you to simultaneously monitor the stream on an iOS device.

How do you let your go pro run while plugged into a charger? i have the housing on mine, and there are no openings to stick the charging cable in.

Just saw this thread, due to the newest posting activity. I bought a GoPro (whatever the then-current version was) in early May 2013, on impulse at a charity auction without a chance to learn much about it. I thought it would be great for chasing, but when I got it home I was dismayed to find that it did not even come with a memory card, and I would have to spend more money on that and proper mounting equipment. Operation of the unit also looked to be complicated, based on the manual. I simply did not have time to deal with it in the remaining time before my chase trip.

I tried to return it to a store where it was purchased by the contributor to the auction, but it was beyond the return period. So I stuffed it in a drawer, telling myself the money went to a good cause, and forgot all about it until seeing this thread.

So maybe I should actually try to use this thing for Stormchase 2014... Tell me, is the operation easier than I think? And what, exactly, do I need for the simplest temporary windshield/dashboard mounting in a rental vehicle?

Thanks,
Jim
