False Spotter Network Reports - May 26, 2009

Didn't you guys hear? Peterbuilt is selling a vehicle primarily for chasers now....

Something else to note here is the quality and availability of data when someone actually submits a report. There's been more than one occasion where I click to submit a report, and the form pulls up fine, and I fill out the information and click submit, and then go about hopping out to take photos or look at other data. Five or ten minutes later, I realize the report didn't go through and refresh and submit, but forget to go back and edit to denote what would now be classified as a slightly delayed report. It's not a SN flaw, but rather a need for the user to pay for attention to detail I suppose.

This tends to happen in poor coverage areas, or when there are massive chaser convergences and slow data quality, but it can make someone look suspicious if you don't know the circumstances.

I strongly agree, I think the names on SN should either be call sign or full name. The mentioned names mean nothing to me, so I would have to think that the NWS would be hesitant to believe reports coming in from someone with the name CNEM2.

I would also agree with the full name or callsign, but being in the business, I can almost bet you that CNEM2 stands for Cheyenne County (KS) Emergency Management "2". Any other "cutesy" handle is useless and makes reports look unprofessional. I guess chaser websites or company names could also be used, but LV4theChase or KorePuncherz or something equally silly just looks bad. (No offense to anyone using these handles. I just made them up.) :D

I guess one of the problems this has thrown up is that the ability to input your location, rather than taking it straight from your GPS, allows people to 'locate' themselves in many places in quick succession.

Whilst I know someone needs to be able to enter their location for stationary spotting purposes, etc, is there not some kind of a need to limit who can input stationary data? Everyone else then has to have a GPS position. Perhaps during sign-up, people have to explain why they would need to input a single position.

I know this then creates the issue of there being a problem if your GPS packs up!

Just a thought anyway.
