I think there are so many factors involved in it, and with my lack of meteorology background I don't think I could give a good educated guess, but my feelings lean toward the fact that where the more isolated storms within the hurricane occur is where you're going to see the heavier rainfall. The SW portion of Isabel that I went through here on the coastline (seemed to me) had spurts of heavy rainfall, and the visibility was not that bad at all. Something like a Noreaster blowing through with much stronger winds.
