if you look closely at it, looks like it has been pieced together, there is a big line right through left third of it, i would say it's a sham.

Agreed with Josh, this is way to smooth to be real and has a line through it.
 
Way too smooth and something that size would have come apart on impact with the ground (or anything else). That's not even a good attempt at a fake, tbh.
 
I didn't think it was real either. Someone else had posted it on another board, and I figured I would see what everyone here thought, since I hadn't heard squat about it. I figured it was far too smooth and perfect for it to be real, and besides, someone would have been all over it if it had been truth.
 
Not only is it not even close to the correct shape of hailstone - it is a photo taken in what appears to be a classroom.

Probably a lame high school project that involve freezing water inside a balloon like another poster above stated.

If anything, a practical joke posted by HS (or even MS) kids, that got tweeted, FB'd etc. around the net till it got picked up by a source DESPERATE to run anything and everything to get high web traffic.
