Didn't get out of work in Lincoln until 4:30, so made my way west to Grand Island. North of Grand Island on Highway 281, we had storms lined up north/south, all to our west. This is my first season using ThreatNet, so it's interesting to compare what the program is showing with what's actually there. Saw some convectively-induced dust storms, which produced a rather eerie effect against the dark skies.
Decided to head back south to intercept the storms firing south of Hastings. Traveling through Grand Island, we noticed a large gust front which had that wall-cloud lookalike appearance. As we proceeded towards Interstate 80, it crossed in front of us. Just as we had a good view of it, the armored plated "Tornado Car" buzzed by us in the next lane heading in the same direction. Gave me second thoughts for just a moment!
We played storms all the way to York, but found Highway 81 was closed north of town. With sunset approaching, we decided to call it a night and headed home.
