3/22/11 NOW: IA/NE/KS/MO

defined hook echo now right over greensfield. This is a powerful supercell.

des moines could take a direct hit

I doubt the potentially tornadic part of that storm is going to go over Des Moines (might graze the south end), but if you look at the VIL scan you can see that if the storm holds together, there are going to be a lot of happy roofers in central Iowa.

Anyone have any idea how strong these potential tornadoes are? It looks like on radar there are two areas of rotation and both are headed for Des Moines.. if we are talking about a violent tornado(es) this could be really bad... and "grazing" a large population center isn't like grazing a small town..

Note: I am looking at the rotation to the north of the Greenfield cell near Winterset.. I think. That area is headed right towards downtown.

Yep. The storm has been between 65 and 67 dbz which has to be some good sized hail.

Barring any research radar trucks nearby, there is currently no way to estimate the strength of a tornado until after the tornado is finished and damage survey teams can go out and inspect the damage. While you often see chasers point at a tornado and say "THAT LOOKS LIKE AN F4!", what they're really saying is "I'M REALLY EXCITED RIGHT NOW AND AM GOING TO SAY SILLY THINGS!"

From the current vectors, though, the south side of Des Moines should be starting to worry a little bit.

What about the cell to the Northwest of Madison/Winterset? Warning text indicates "624 CDT" tornado reported. And that's a high velocity couplet. who is on that one?

That is what had me more "impressed" than the Crescent storm. I would love to see some high quality velocity data images of that northern storm. Do you guys think its inflow is being cut off by the adjacent cell to the south?

Very nice couplet now on velocities. Hope this thing cycles or falls apart in the next 20 minutes, as that's making a beeline for the south-end of DSM.

Looks like you got what you hoped for.. looks like the outflow of the adjacent storm to the south cut off the inflow. The couplet is "gone" for now.. it is an interesting evolution to watch on radar.
