3/08/11 REPORTS: TX/OK/AR/LA

Jim Bishop, Tom Santillo, and I documented a large tornado west of Clarksville, TX. Tornado had a large multivortex appearance for a majority of the time we could see it, and took on the appearance of a stovepipe, cone, and wedge at times. Below are some low quality video stills and a link to a quick page we threw up tonight.

Got into some large hail a ways West of Paris, TX. Saw this one fall ... about the size of a tennis ball. Got a bit behind the storm messing with the hail, experienced some rfd punching back through as the storm became tornado warned. Saw some damage that I assumed at the time was probably due to strong rfd.

Missed the tornado/tornadoes. Storm looked like this as I got back ahead of it around Paris. Really didn't think spotting a tornado was possible without being back in it, congratulations to those who did. Having been in the core/bears cage for a while I was just trying to get ahead a ways at this point to find a place to pull over with a view. Storm tracked right down the only decent E/W highway so that made for some prolonged excitement.

Couldn't get away from Norman, OK till a little after 2pm and raced Southeast to Hugo, OK then east on hwy 70 to Millerton, OK and South on hwy 98/37 to Clarksville, TX. Punched south narrowly missing the core and no more than 10 min later the rain-wrapped tornado crossed hwy 37 infront of us. Could see a big cone shortly before got my vidcam up and running with vortices barely visible through the rain as it crossed the hwy. Came across some fairly significant damage on the north side of Clarksville with the worst looking to be a roof completely gone on a house, power poles snapped and a couple overturned vehicles.

followed an HP from northern Collin Co. to SW of Honey Grove, TX in Fannin Co. Storm straddled Hwy 82 with baseball hail, so we kept SW of it and watched it go through Paris, TX. We then dropped south to Sulpher Springs and caught another supercell there. No T's for us. tm

Was on the Highway 82 cell right up to about Bonham when it went tornado warned. Didn't like it's HP-ness and with multiple cells to the S and W thought 'one of these will also make it happen over better terrain'. Not like that decision hasn't worked out for myself and countless other chasers in the past -- but alas the atmosphere didn't cooperate with us and we left the storm of the day just before it decided to produce multiple tornadoes, albeit rain-wrapped and very low visibility. Not feeling too many regrets at that decision today, although would have been nice to officially see a tornado for 2011 -- chasing in that area wasn't as bad as I feared though. Definitely made the most of the day and definitely can't wait to go again

I chased solo on the 8th, although my friend Zack did some nowcasting for me. Started south of Sherman, catching a nice cell with a pronounced lowering. Zack then redirected me to Greenville to catch a new cell that was in the better air. Stayed with it until dark near Sulpher Springs.

Had a meeting in Norman, so did not get out of there until early afternoon.. In a nutshell, we headed southeast and got ahead of the Clarksville, TX storm.. We watched radar trends, and saw that the south storms were not doing anything too interesting, and that the best tornado potential was off to the east, and near the warm front, where some better low level shear and moisture existed.

Also, a radar grab as the tornado is just to our west.. Shortly after this image, we watch it cross the road ahead of us about a 1/2 mile, and we go through Clarksville immediately behind the tornado. Rainwrapped as heck, but hopefully some contrast enhanced stills will be able to show what we saw with our eyes!

Headed north from Dallas Tx to intercept the line of storms that was developing and trying to organize... and then.... and then some time when I get near Trenton Tx one storm in the line started to explode and became tornadic warned... followed it to Paris Tx and gave up due to the traffic jam/hail and bad terrain ect... lol over all it was a verrrrry fun day....

Was on the Lamar/Red River cell until we lost it after it went through Paris. Saw a funnel near Brookston, then wall cloud near Paris. Missed the tornadoes. Congrats to those who caught them. Not a simple feat in that environment.

I left a bit early from work to pursue a cell that had produced a near-whiteout of heavy mostly pea, some dime hail right over Richland College where I work ( and I mostly missed seeing due to a staff meeting). Of course the cell eluded me, but it was beautiful up ahead as it build into a hybrid supercell/multicell. Meantime I made a nearly 200 mile loop from Richardson to Greenville to Sulphur Springs, TX then to Canton and back to Richardson. Encountered profoundly heavy rain, small hail, occasional lightning and beautiful clouds. It was capped off by a spectacular lighting show between Emory and Canton TX after dark.
