My chase partner for the past two years, Matt Harding, is taking a rough semester in college and holding down a couple of jobs, so we aren't going to be able to partner this year -- at least during school. Of course that coincides with a year I'm going to have more availability...
I'm based out of Wichita and would have preference for someone in this area. I'm a pretty mellow guy, but tend to play close to the action. I'm probably packing as much tech in the van as anyone out here...but as you can see on my blog, I'm not afraid to take out with nothing more than my phone....seems like that was the majority of my chasing last year. I will have the availability at times to stay out multiple days, and on big events I tend to play the day before as hard or harder than the "main event." I have preference to chase in Kansas, but have been known to venture as far as Abilene, TX and the southern edge of Michigan. Flexible schedule (I run my own company, and can unload much of my daily workload when multi-day events arise). Like any sane chaser, I stay out of SE Oklahoma....no death wish here.
I'm looking primarily for a driver, but once I have a chance to see your radar evaluation skills and so forth first-hand, I'm not opposed to doing the chase-mode driving on occasion. I'm also quite willing in many cases to do the post-chase driving. I have a heavy preference for someone with a good amount of adverse weather driving experience, if you have EVOC or similar training, even better.
I am a former EMT, and my constitution is such that I will stop and help at the first sign of a need. In only one instance, Greensburg, has there ever been a pang of regret for the instinct of stopping at the first sign of potential injury, entrapment or the like, and that's only because if I'd crested the next hill, I would have been able to do a live report with eyes-on the storm from about 3 miles away...I've always wondered if my choice kept someone from seeking cover. I am in this as much or more for getting out warning information that saves lives than I am for the glory or excitement of the chase or having my name known. That's the major reason for my preference for chasing in Kansas.
Concerning $: if you don't mind doing the driving, I don't mind paying for the gas. Meals/snacks are on your own, but I'll buy the steak dinner when we bag a tornado ;-) If we're out multiple nights, I'll happily share a motel room if appropriate. I'm generally a Days Inn/Super 8 kind of person.
Folks who might have long trips to get here: please PM me anyway -- if you want to come out for a few days or so, I'm willing to try and work it out. If I hook up with a full-time chase partner, there's still often room -- though the van gets a bit sluggish in handling once we're at 4 people, so I try not to go over that. Travelers get priority over my local friends who like to get in at the last minute...it's only right, eh?
Here's to a successful season!
