03/19/10 DISC: TX

FWIW, I've just received confirmation from Alec Jones that the funnel in my video is NOT what they saw the ground rotation underneath. So that solves one mystery. Now the question is, just what is it that we have there? Sure looks like a tornado, but I guess with the trees in the way we'll never know for sure. But I'm thinking yeah.

Either way, this thread's conclusion has been drawn and we can move forward.

I originally thought the SN report mentioned the tornado.

From SNs twitter feed [if you have a twitter it might be worth following - http://twitter.com/spotternetwork]

06:44 PM CDT(S) Rotating Wall Cloud<-Spotter is 0 miles WNW of Pledger, TX-Broad rotation with brief tube under base...

Not the best report IMO but it was at least mentioned. "Tube" is a word that has loose interpretations, but when I read it I assumed it meant tornado. Perhaps chasers should not use slang words in reports.

Even if it meant tornado - it's a bad report as it he was under the leading precip at the time. So if he thought he had a tornado overhead, he was really misinterpreting the clouds.

If he saw a tornado in the distance, it might have been better to submit that as a "tornado" report instead of just a wall cloud. Either way - there was no tornado over top of him, or rotating wall cloud either.

Rotating Blow-Off

You reported the rotating wall cloud and "tube" as directly over top of you. Based on radar, comparing the SN lat/long to the rotation, you were 9.8 miles away at the time of the report -- so I said "8-10" as a little leeway and accounting for the motion of the storm between scans. In any case, I don't believe it was directly above you. If you have photos to correlate, I'll be the first to openly apologize.

You lost me. I never said you didn't see a tornado. I said that if you reported a wall cloud directly over top of you - it wasn't a wall cloud. I didn't watch your stream, but I saw two other streams in your very close vicinity and the wall cloud on theirs was clearly in the distance.

If you review your SN report - it was given two reds (I only have one vote ;) ) so apparently I'm not the only one who didn't believe that your wall cloud location was correct.

Nobody is saying you should have SN'ed a tornado if you weren't sure. It's a great idea to report a rotating wall cloud and then note in the remarks that you've seen a rotating cloud formation dropping down out of it but are unsure.

Next time I'll state (X) miles to my SSW so idiots don't think I am reporting from within the rotation or saying there's rotation in the blow-off. lol:confused:

I will say also that all my SN reports are green other than that one.

Some of you need new hobbies.

If you think there's never been a case where a spotter (trained) reported rotation in the scud or blowoff or even anvil clouds, you ain't been listening to a lot of Skywarn nets ;)
