Tornado Paintings

US Copyright law doesn't have any specifics on if you change something from an original and how much you have to change before it is considered 'new' work. In a sense, anytime you use a photo to make something like artwork and it is taken from a photograph in which you do not have permission then it is a copyright violation. There is a lot of people who think that if you change something, like adding in lightning, or taking out a tree, etc. that you've changed it enough for it to not be a copyright violation. Truth is, it still could be judged as a violation...

Beings there is no specifics on how much you have to change, there is only general rules as to how much you can take from an original. From what I've read thus far it seems like you should only take 10-20% from an original, otherwise it could be deemed a copyright violation. So in other words, this guy if it was proven to be inspired by H's photos, is likely easily within copyright violation... But, like most copyright violations, they are hardly ever worth taking it up in court unless it is somebody with some major money.

oblivious, unconcerned

I'm intrigued how the people appear so unconcerned about--even oblivious to--.

Picher, OK. I bought some corn from this guy on the roadside.
I could not take my eyes off this cloud above his head.
He could not care less.

This is actually a great idea. I have a close friend who is a painter and I'm thinking of asking her if she could do a painting from one of my photos. After looking at how H's painting came out, I'm really interested to see how other ones will.

The other week I was going through a stack of older drawings when I came across this one done in 2004. No reference was used, I was simply wanting to add a waterspout to the list of things i've drawn.

Per the copyright discussion, a place one can go for free reference material that I know of is the NOAA Photo Library. I've used it in the past and is sufficient.

That's a great drawing Paul! I used to draw tornadoes when i was bored in class during high school and my first years of college. I don't do it that much anymore. My friend asked me to draw a tornado in his yearbook when we graduated high school and had me sign the bottom.

While real photographs of tornadoes and supercells are amazing, I find that the artistic expression of those same events is interesting. If the painting is too much like the photo, I don't see the point, but most artists have their own styles that come out in the artwork. For instance, most of John's paintings feature a person or people in the foreground. I don't think those people would stand just yards in front of a mile wide twister under normal circumstances. Maybe he was trying to give the painting more depth or simply a scale to show the size of the tornado. I don't think it would be right to sell a painting that was inspired by someone's photograph, but it's interesting to see the "spin" different artists put on their work.

Those are some REALLY nice paintings. Especially the ones from 2003 thru 2007. They don't contain people who are completely oblivious to/looking away from the tornado. LOL Not to realistic on that note

Chase Highlight Piece

I've seen some really awesome artwork from this thread. I have a question for those of you who enjoy weather artwork. Would any of you be interested in having pieces made from your highlight chases...say a matted and framed collection of radar, satellite, weather maps, tornado pics from one of your favorite chases. Each picture or map would be uniquely drawn or painted and put together as one piece. Obviously it would come with a price tag, but nothing beyond reason. If you are interested or have some ideas shoot me a message.

This is an interesting proposal. Sounds pretty cool. I definitely have some unforgettable chases and it would be cool to have some more personalized artwork that comes from an actual chase. Great idea!

When you mention about drawing maps and such, you reminded me of a piece I drew back in 2003 but never really did anything with. I was looking at a TWC radar image of some supercell and it struck me as having the appearance of an eyeball so I decided to play around with idea in cp and ink.

Those paintings are really good! I really like the one of the farmer. His body language seems to have a helpless feel to it, which is what I would be feeling if it were my farm.

That would be so cool! I definately have some pretty storms and interesting tornado shots that would be great artwork. And I would know the story behind it all, like where it took place, who it affected, ect. Good idea.
