StormTrack Slow?

Yay! New Posts is back :D

I searched the archive but didn't find a definitive answer.

Tim, do you take donations where those of us that want to can donate $ towards a more powerful server and get a spiffy "Stormtrack $upporter" rank or something?

A couple of the other forums I frequent do this for hosting expenses or server upgrades and it does help them.

Logged in at 4:10 pm today (May 10) and Stormtrack was running slower than a Florida driver in the left lane, so I went ahead and rebooted. The "who's online" display shows we are getting swamped with users. I am probably going to put Stormtrack in low CPU mode and temporarily take some of the bells and whistles offline... and if I can figure out an easy way to do it I'll go ahead and cut off guest access if I can figure out how to do it easily, though there's nothing for them to look at until the reports start coming online.

Seems like critical mass is being reached in terms of the number of people looking at anything storm chasing related. Not just ST, but all live chaser feeds and associated websites were painfully slow for me today.

As slow as the site is running tonight, I think we can put to rest the idea that "search" is the culprit.

I would say that the "search" function is the symptom and not the
problem.

It is showing that one or both of two things is happening.

1. Some issue with the server.
2. To many hits for the server(s) to handle.

It was real slow even when the search was removed. So
slow I gave up getting into it.

So they can restrict who has access to it or improve the
server situation, speed/number/load balancing..or both.

Hope it gets worked out....

I think an upgrade in servers is in order. There are many more storm chasers/enthusiasts/etc. that are aware of and even frequent StormTrack, particularly during the height of the season (just look at SpotterNetwork on 10 May!)... to the point that the current server load cannot handle the traffic at peak storm chase times. Tim V. may need to upgrade, because I've seen this problem on many occasions since 2007 on the really big chase days. The Greensburg day comes to mind.. I was frustrated I couldn't check in to the NOW thread and get a live update from chasers/nowcasters... it's a great source for reports in-situ for operational radar operators like myself... although the emergence/popularity of SpotterNetwork has helped relieve the reliance on the Stormtrack NOW thread for reports.

I did the $20 VIP "Stormtrack Supporter" deal a couple of weeks ago when this issue first emerged, so hopefully if others do the same a new server will become a reality sooner rather than later. During these big events like yesterday everybody and their brother is going on the internet to search storm chasing and it shows. It seems fine today FWIW.

I have to agree. If we can talk about moving the site to a better host I differently will support the change. I would like to see a plan in place before donating though. (I do support via purchases from Tim's store.)

Where is the site hosted? I use bluehost.com and although I don't have near the traffic they seem to be cheap and dependable.

These lack of functions on ST is really starting to suck. I'm sure if a new server comes into play, it won't happen until the season is already over. I might can see disabling the functions when a big day is ongoing and a lot of people are signed in, but why have it disabled all the time?
