South Wind at South Pole?

I was really tempted to enter the global warming debate, but i got side-tracked by this far more profound question:
The winds at the south pole obviously can't be from the south, and something like the prime meridion has to be used for other wind directions. So...how far from the South Pole does one have to be to start using the conventional compass directions??
