SMS text alerts?

Are there any places that offer free text alerts? I'm curious to know if it's
possible to get NWO forecast discussions or SPC statements. I just subscribed
to the NY Alerts one already, but was looking for some place that sends
more detailed info. I only have a simple trac phone right now, but I have
a gazillion minutes to burn on it so I don't mind the minutes usage.

Some day I'll be brave and get an iphone and be able to directly read
this stuff.

I get them from the weather channel, but I also have internet on my blackberry so I hit up weather underground as well. Check them both out.

I have been looking for the link but can't find it at the moment. Its been on my phone for a long time now. I will keep looking and will post how as soon as I find the free version.

However, right now they are sending warning texts only due to an unexpected amount
of folks signing up. Once they have more bandwidth they will open it back up.
It appears so far that no one offers other NWS forecast products and discussions
would take up quite a bit of space. My NY Alerts account is set up to send stuff
to my phone, but it's not working for some reason. Probably because I'm not on
one of the major networks such as Verison/Sprint/ATA+T etc...

I guess for now I'll bring my laptop and use a local Wifi when I stop for lunch
somewhere if I'm out. FWIW there is a slight chance we will have our first
severe weather outbreak tomorrow(5/16/09)here in upstate NY. I guess
I find out if the alerts are truly working or not.

I will continue to look around at some of the other places.

I signed up for the iNWS service a while ago. Only a few days ago was I getting the first texts (due to weather). All of the ones I got came surprisingly late, anywhere from 7 to 15 minutes after the warning was issued. I think I'm going to go back to using TWC's for a while.

I can set up some alerts for you on my EMWIN setup if you'd like. The downside is that it's only fed by the internet stream. It is faster than any other text alert service I've used. I'm also set up with the NWS service mentioned and EMWIN always beats it. When they first offered it my system would beat theirs by a few seconds. Lately it's been beating the NWS service by a couple of minutes at least.
