Record Cold

Right, obviously that's why arguments about climate change based on such a limited period of time in a single location are erroneous. 106 in Sacramento, CA yesterday.

Notice some heat records are being broken in TX:

and then there's FL
The string of daily high temperature records set or tied in Florida during June is being extended in July. In the 30 days since June 7, Miami has had only 2 below average in temperature. Here are some National Weather Service record reports for July 7:

A RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 82 DEGREES WAS SET AT NAPLES
YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 77 SET IN 1949.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE TODAY AT FORT LAUDERDALE REACHED 97 DEGREES AT
3:51 PM EDT. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THIS
DATE...WHICH PREVIOUSLY WAS 96 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1924.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE TODAY AT MIAMI REACHED 95 DEGREES. THIS TIES
THE OLD RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THIS DATE...SET BACK IN 1992.

For July 6:

THE TEMPERATURE CLIMBED TO 95 DEGREES AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT TODAY. THIS TIES THE OLD RECORD OF 95 SET IN 1992.

In addition to the numerous daily records, 18 all-time June high temperature records were tied or broken in Florida last month. In the first 7 days of July, 15 daily high temperature records, including the ones listed above, have been tied or broken in the state.

Really it's a redistribution of warmth and cold right now...not necessarily tied to climate change (although certainly possible).

we hit 56* this morning at 5:56 am here in Murfreesboro, and it was a bit chilly. Close to a record low, but I don't know if we broke it or not.

I'm sure it has to drive Al Gore insane...:D

Global warming refers to long term trends, not localized warm or cool anamolies within a short period of time.

Still, I gotta say, when's summer? Pretty pathetic when we can barely muster enough elevated CAPE for thunder (Ref. MKX AFD from this afternoon), let alone severe storms.

Another record in the books here today. Only managed to reach 68 breaking the old record of 70. Been raining all day adding insult to injury.

Would the fact that the global temperature of the earth has cooled since 1998 be considered a long term trend?

I can't really talk too much more about global warming because it is nothing more than political propaganda and politics aren't allowed to be disgussed here.

Just thank El Nino for the recent cool summer we have been having, and i expect we will see a cool Fall as well with some early snow, but like it was in 1998, right about winter comes around, the Plains better start breaking out the golf clubs...hello summer...in December.

I didn't mean to bring up the climate change topic when I started this thread, and I apologize for having done so. Let's keep this topic about the current cold/hot streak parts of the country have been experiencing. Talk about El Nino is welcome, too.

Global warming, means global... It's not just the Midwest in 2009.... I think Global Wawrming is a political issue, but the summer of 2009 is due to clod cover and rain and just a cool flow. In teh SW, it's been a warm July, so how can we say what is what? Just a very cool summer for most of the Country.

It is widely accepted that "climatology" is on a timescale of 30 years or so and I would consider long term trends to occur over 30+ years.

For me it strikes an interesting case in regards to the minimum solar output there has been, especially a few months ago. I know theres no proven link between solar output and global temperatures, but this year would make a good case for those who believe otherwise.

GFS shows no signs of this breaking down for at least 10 days and according to Mr Skilling only 23% of summers that start out this cool reverse the trend once August rolls around...lets hope this year is one of those 23% because SDS is kicking in too early for me.

Nope, it would not. In fact if you pick any other year around 1998, that trend does not hold. As others have said, you have to look at long-term averages.

I might also mention, since I posted some record lows/low maxima from the St. Louis CWA that, over the course of this year so far, temperatures in St. Louis are still averaging slightly ABOVE normal, despite the recent cool spell.
