Didn't know where this topic would go, but for anyone that's seen the radar site in Stinnett, who's is it? Steve Miller and I had a discussion about this, that its possibly KVII's own radar that they use to get live radar as opposed to a government radar. I was just curious.

Looking at the radar image from their website posted below, it appears it isn't anywhere close to Stinnet. My bad. But, now I'm pretty darned curious!

Looks to me like a unit owned by a local TV station. Many of the TV stations in Iowa have their own radar units (I believe the ones near Des Moines are 5 cm C-band radars), some even have dual-pol capabilities.

The stream seems to be working now.

Not sure, I struggle to believe a TV station would pay for streaming video of the radar, add audio from Sirius XM radio, and not have any advertising of any sorts on the feed.

Not only that but if you look at the stream you can tell its just a camera in front of a monitor and if a local tv station was doing it I assume they would have something set up better than just a camera parked in front of a screen. At the very least they would have it lined up a bit better.

Yeah I just realized that its just a webcam looking at a monitor, HAHA. Not only that but that radar does not loop too often, a good 15 seconds before it decides to loop again.

The Amarillo market is pretty small. :-) KVII Channel 7 is the only one to have their own.

I think Rob is onto it though...makes sense. I may call up there tomorrow morning just for grins to find out for sure.

Well...someone mentioned KVII and if you go to their website and click on the weather tab, guess what is displayed clearly, looping often.

What I see looks like SMTX's picture above. I don't see the stream out of Stinnett unless I'm missing something?

Actually Steve ch4 also has their own radar but it is an older version and they dont use it much anymore relying mostly on their data coming through Barons system. Ch7's radar is just north of Amarillo.

Could this be a private system like Baron? I know they have their own sites all over the place. I looked at their site but couldnt find a listing for their radar sites.

I would love somebody to put one up in the NW panhandle near Dalhart or Clayton, NM to cover that hole and one near Woodward, OK. Then we wouldnt have those big holes in coverage.

The radar in Stinnett is owned by Hutchinson County and is used by the EOC here when there are storms in the area. They display it on the city channel here in Borger on Channel 11. It is an older radar but it is better than nothing. They tried to get funds for a newer radar a few years back but I dont think the city council went for it. It is really nice to be able to flip on the tv during a storm and always have a radar up with the EOC chatter in the background. Hutchinson County is definitely one of the best informed when severe weather is in the area.

Here is what that radar image looks like.

Here is a severely cropped image showing the radar. I have never taken a picture of it, it just happen to be in this photo. It is on a hill on the north side of town. I am sure somone has a better photo of it than this even though I live 13 miles away.

Woodward is about 50 miles from the Vance AFB -88D. That is prime coverage (i.e., close but outside the clutter).

You are right that there are holes in -88D coverage. On a population versus coverage basis, there needs to be a radar near Moberly, MO or just north of there.

I would like to see CASA (3cm) or a 5cm radar (much less expensive than an -88D 10 cm radar) supplemental network started to plug some of these holes in areas with poor coverage and/or along major transportation corridors with poor coverage (I-15; Powder River Basin).
