Does anyone have a download link for the Alltel Quicklink Mobile app? I've been using Motorola Phone Tools to make the connection, but now that's not working for some reason. Thought I could try the Alltel Quicklink Mobile application to see if that solved any problems, but can't find a download link on the web. Or, is this part of the software package that you have to purchase from Alltel?

Thanks,
Van

Well, Alltel confirmed that the data connections are down right now. So, just have to wait, as it's nothing on my end, so guess I don't need QLM afterall.

J,

I have no idea, I can't connect at all. I've been on the phone with Alltel tech support for about the last 2 hours, with 3 different people. They had a data issue earlier, and refuse to admit that they still have a problem. They said that had to drop the data connection for awhile because the roaming data was crashing their network (hmm, could this be because of chasers?). They said everything came back up by late afternoon, yet I still can't connect.

So, have no idea if Alltel is compressing images. I hadn't installed their web accelerator, which should compress the images. But, without it, I would think the data wouldn't be compressed. Images weren't compressed a couple of weeks ago.

Alltel's data was down for some people for part of today -- though supposedly it's back up again. You don't need anything special to connect to Alltel; if your modem driver works for your phone and you log in correctly, you're in.

It does looks like Alltel is starting to implement an image-by-proxy server setup. That is, all images you get off the internet won't come directly from the websites you find them on, but rather through Alltel's proxy that will cache said images. This is going on right now -- most of my images are coming from 1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.2, 1.1.1.3, etc. Other forums have reported seeing highly compressed images, though this may have been an accident on Alltel's part. Ultimately, they're probably going to institute compression, as there is little point in having a proxy system without it.

The weird thing is that the bandwidth bottleneck is not, one would think, the actual pipe Alltel has going to the internet, but rather the wireless bandwidth of each cell tower. So I'm not sure why they're so gung-ho on this whole proxy thing. Most likely their highest sources of bandwidth will be from Bittorrent traffic and streaming video (Youtube), of which this does nothing to help. I'm at a loss for Alltel's reasoning on this one.

You can find more info on the proxy/compression being implemented here:

Ryan,

I can't even get an Axcess connection on the phone, so yes, there still are data issues. Well, at least GR3 data wouldn't be compressed, once I get a data connection back on my PC :)

Van,

I tether with Alltel using Quicklink Mobile and did have connection issues while chasing today from around noon MDT until around 2pm MDT. After that time frame, I was able to keep a connection for about 98% of the time in eastern CO where the signal is arguable not that great. I've been back home for a few hours and was just able to connect via cell so perhaps the problems are ongoing in Omaha. Hope everything is back to normal for you if you plan on chasing tomorrow.

Isn't this same compression that Sprint tried a few years ago but dropped it after they had lots of complaints ? I would think that this might cause some problems for people that use Alltel to stream a chasecam. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a slowdown and hope that things go back to the way that they used to be

Well, finally got data back up about 1015 this evening. I did notice that all iamges were coming form 1.1.1.1, but seemed to be the same size as when browsing through normal cable modem connection. So, no compression on images tonight, but perhaps the proxy server is just the first step.
