PatchMaster Lightning Trigger

Evan,

We have placed the hotshoe as back as possible. However there is battery compartment at the bottom of the device and it is not possible to move the hotshoe much more. I may upload a photo which shows how the device looks in a few days.

Thomas,

Thanks for your interest. I will be happy to offer a discount for you. Please check your message box for details.

Regards..

Call me crazy, but why not move the battery compartment to the top of the device? Seems there should be plenty of room to fit it, along with the on/off switch and the LED lights?? Or move the on/off switch to the side so that your graphics can still fit. :)

Hi Evan,

There are 2 reasons.

1. It will not be so smart if we place the hotshoe on top of the device.
2. Top of the device is not suitable for mounting the hotshoe since it is designed for placing label. Bottom of the device is stronger than the top.

Erkan,

Sorry I didn't make myself clearer. My idea was to keep the hotshoe at the bottom of the device. However, in order to move it far enough rearward to prevent interference with composing your image, my suggestion was to move the BATTERY compartment cover to the top, and maybe the on/off switch to the site to allow a cleaner label branding. I would hate to see further development of this really neat device suffer at the expense of a sticker/label.

I would draw up my suggestion, but my graphics skills are limited to stick figures, low/high pressure systems and fronts :)

Evan

First of all, nice, clean photos of your product! Well done.

OK, here is my terrible 5-year old quality rendition of what I would do.

Hi Evan,

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, we cannot move the battery cover to the top since this is not a custom box for our device. It has a standard shape. So we must use it as is. If we can find an other box for this solution we may consider to use it for our further versions. Thanks for spending your time to make your solution more clear.

Regards..

Have to ask...(because I'm just in that kind of mood)....so with the new unit...you get the required FCC type acceptance or in the process?

FCC testing can be a real pain , I know . Be advised they can instruct U.S Customs to not even let the product in the country . Be careful and you should really try to deal with FCC issues and not ignore them.

Lighting Trigger Testing

FCC BS aside.......

I finally got a few minutes of testing in today in daylight hours on the side of a passing storm. One of my concerns was too much sensitivity or too little. I wasn't at all sure it wasn't still too light to get distant strikes but I was rather surprised at my initial test. I was zoomed in for these shots but keep in mind the Lightning Trigger doesn't zoom so the lightning footprint was very small for the Lighting Trigger.

This was off to the side.

These two were distant and faint.

And still distant.

In short until I can actually get some cooperative weather and get in a real review I was really impressed with the sensitivity and response of version 2 so far.

I have yet to get a decent storm with good lightning to test my Lightning Trigger :( I will still post a review when I am able to finally conduct a proper test.....if storms would begin to cooperate!

That is where I am at but I am feeling better about using it for daytime stuff as that is where I have a need rather than night time. With my lightning strike photo counts it seems pointless but for me saving a few thousand actuations on a 1500$ camera has got to be worth something.

Erkan,

can you scan the instructions for the patchmaster into .pdf format and put a link on your website? I have misplaced my instructions, and I'm out in Oklahoma and would love to get some test runs in but I can't seem to find any on your website.

or if someone else could scan theirs in that would be great. I have the Canon 5D-MKII but I don't think it matters which camera.
