• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

I would like anyone's advice as to a good video camera under $3000 that films in 1080i or p and has good wind/noise reduction. I currently have a Sony HDR SR-1 and the wind noise is horrible, the HD picture's great though. Or if you have a good combination that works, like a great camera with a good external mike and possibly a wind screen. Thanks for the help!

I have no idea how it compares with the SR-1, but im about to get an HV20, as all the other posts on this topic seem to come back to this make/ model.

Your best bet for under $3000 would be an HV20/30 or any other similarly priced consumer cameras with a good microphone with a softie on it. If you got that not only would your audio be better, you wouldn't have much, if any wind noise to worry about :)

I will be finally ordering a new vid camera within the next week and I am down to these two:

HVR-HD1000U 1600$

but this is so nice:

JVC GY-HD110U 4300$

Its a lot more but after being a tv photog for two years I want something more like that. I don't think I would be happy with the single ring for focus zoom etc. Decisions Decisions!

That JVC would be a lot better than the Sony, but you are getting what you pay for. That Sony is the same thing as a HDR-HC8 except it's shoulder mount. The best HD camera under $5000 is the XH-A1 IMHO :)

Yeah and it's smaller too which would make it even more practical for storm chasing use. That JVC would be tough to use inside of a vehicle...but with either one the video is just going to be stunning :)

I've been looking at that XH-A1 and it seems like a pretty good choice for control freaks like me. Anybody here have it and if so how is its low light performance?

All:

For those who received a huge tax return, have a look at the new Sony PMW-EX1 camcorder here.

Excellent (very near)true HD, blows away HDV---by a mile, and excellent low light. Oh, yeah...it does 1080P. Its uses technology found in their $75K++ camera.

Certainly spells death to the Panasonic HVX200....

Wow! I read some other reviews on that thing, it sounds amazing. So when are you going to stick 7 of them in one of you probes? LOL

That camera Tim mentioned look great though definitely out of my price range. I have been considering the HDR-FX1

or even better, the

Is it my imagination but has the price gone up on the HDR-FX1? B and H shows it as $3049 plus shipping.

Currently, I am spoiled with my VX-2100. I'd really like to see another generation of Sony HD camcorders at the level of the FX1. I wish Sony would have an HD equivalent (not that highly compressed AVCHD format) of the VX-2000 or at least the TRV-900.
