Is there software/hardware that can be used with GRLevel3

to show on your laptop where you are at in relation to a storm? USB GPS? Thanks in advance. Also, how well does phone tethering work compared to $60/mo aircard plan? Thanks.

If you have the right kind of GPS, then yes you can link it to GRLevel3. That's actually one of my favorite features. I know many GPS units do not have the right kind of output (I can't remember what it is called), but there are programs like Franson GpsGate that can fix this problem.

NEMA is what you should look for. I use a DeLorme EarthMate puck with a serial emulator so I can use it with other aps besides GRLevel3.

I tether with an alltel phone and I used an alltel aircard last year.I can't tell a any difference where I have been except when I recive a call some times it doesnt ring.

I have done both with AllTel and can not tell much difference on the day to day applications. I decided to go with the air card when video streaming came into consideration. I also did it late last year so that I could get a two year AllTel contract with unlimited data uploads before Verizon took over. I believe you can still get the unlimited data plan.

I was told that as long as I renew the contract before it expires I can keep the unlimited plan... That remains to be seen...

BTW... NEMA is the way we usual say the acronym but the proper one is NMEA which stands for 'National Marine Electronics Association', the group that defined the 'sentences' used for GPS marine navigation. Yes, I was educated about this in another group... GRIN..

As far as GPS units go, there are several 'pucks' available about the size of a fifty cent coin. I personally use a GPS 2 from Byonics.com, but have also used several others including the Delorme blue tooth connected BT-20.

The GPS input is shared by several programs via Franson's GPS Gate program. I don't leave home without it...

So then I can buy a Garmin or other "puck" and purchase the Fransen GpsGate and then it should work with GRLevel3. I'm thinking maybe I need to go to my local computer shop guy and have him set this up for me, sounds complicated. I have XP thanks to my work, can't use Vista. Is this all compatible with XP, too? My son works for Garmin, but I doubt I'll get to KC very soon. Can you buy these such as at Best Buy?

If GRLevel3 is the only program on your computer that will be GPS "enabled", and the GPS unit that you buy is the right kind (NMEA output and auto startup on powerup) then you should not need the Franson software. However, as soon as you add one more program to the mix (e.g., SpotterNetwork) then you would need the Franson software (or another GPS but, you get a lot more flexibility with the Franson software).

A lot of folks--me included--use DeLorme Street Atlas, which comes with a GPS puck. You can probably buy just the puck, but the software is so inexpensive that you might as well get the whole package.

Once you've got that, you can download the serial emulator for free and hook up GPS with multiple programs to your heart's content. I typically link my puck to GR3, Street Atlas, and sometimes GR2 or GR2AE concurrently. Works great.

Except the Delorme has issues on Vista and they haven't updated the emulator software I think since 2007. I am ditching my delorme puck for a real one for that reason.

My U720 Sprint card also doubles as a GPS reciever. I use it in my Delorme and GR3...

I used Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 with gps locator last year and it worked with Grlevel3. The gps locator is a little square thing that plugs in to a usb port. It worked just fine on my laptop that has Vista and it worked for SN, GPS on Gr, and of course Streets and Trips. I paid a little over $100 for it last year, and I have no big complaints about it.

<o></o>[/FONT]Interesting. My Sprint EX720 has GPS capability, but Iâ€™ve yet to be able to get that part to work, even using the latest SmartView software. Iâ€™m sure I could get that fixed with a little bit of time talking to tech support.

What are the possibilities I could use an EX720 with GRLevelX, SN, etc?

Not an issue for me since I run XP, but that's helpful information for Vista users (which will probably include me at some point). The emulator works fine with XP, and the new LT-40 puck seems to perform better than the earlier LT-20, so for now, at least, I see no need to purchase one of the pricier models.
