Inspeed Anemometers

From what I understand the Davis cups don't hold up well to highway speeds. That's not from personal experience, but it does make sense - the Inspeed cups seem more robust than the OS/Davis ones.

I think the ideal full-time vehicle anemometer (second to an RM Young) would be the ultrasonic models. Some have other sensors built in, so you could have a complete set of obs in a much more inconspicuous and reliable package.

Yeah I think you are right, oh well I found a pretty good one that was designed for marine applications for about 800 with tax and does just about everything so I think I might go with it after I finish replacing my video camera with a HD one.

I used the inspeed anemometer back in 07 and lost several cups as well. They redesigned the mold to add a little extra support to the cups. The new cup design held well and I didnt break one from driving or chasing but I did drop a box on it and broke it that way [ugh.] I think Lorenzo is the guy from customer service who is always very nice to work with and even sent me a replacement free of charge once.

I see they now have a support arm for the magnetic mount, I too have added about a foot of extra steel to make mine taller so it would be out of the air stream of my vehicle. I had a problem with the magnets coming loose though, so I just had them welded together. The support would be a nice add on, I may have to pick up one those...

i haven't had any problems with the breaking of cups or mounts. the only problem i have is calibrating it. on a calm day i tested it and was driving 55mph, the inspeed was only registering 43mph, so if anyone knows how to calibrate it please let me know. but all in all i like this anemometer.

I haven't shed a single cup since they changed the design of them. Yes I try to avoid having it up when on the freeway, but I leave it on when on state and county roads all the time and haven't had a problem. As far as calibrating it, the directions are all on their website. When my battery died, I recalibrated and all seems fine. I trust the speeds on it given driving speeds, etc.

So, yeah, no problems here for the last couple years.

Are you sure that you had the anemometer totally out of the slip stream of the vehicle?

John, did you ever notice it slowly get more inaccurate with time?

It's still accurate as the day I got it. When I changed the battery I had to email Inspeed to find out what model code to program in the calibration.

I love my Inspeed.
The mags are starting to rust though.

I had one for 2007 and lost 2 cup's in one week , sold it and got a Davis Weather Wizard 3. I leave it up in the spring and only lost cup's once after hitting a down power line in Lone Grove.
