How Many Threads On Stormtrack Are 'New'?

If people don't do a basic search to see what's already been discussed, and just start the conversation out from scratch -- then I think it's okay to wipe out and suggest they look to see what they can add as opposed to opening up with a blank slate (that's not really blank.)

One solution could be a frequently-posted topics forum. Then, if a member starts a new thread on a frequently-posted topic anywhere on ST, the moderators can quickly merge it with one of the existing threads in that forum and post a note about the thread merge.

This would be a good solution, especially if enough people are getting their panties in a bunch over it. I rarely post new topics myself, and when I do I'm guilty of not following the "search first" policy. Then again, just about every thread would qualify as "already been discussed" eventually.

Maybe just a frequently posted "Hot" topics fourm, with threads such as...lightbars, chasing regulations and the like. Other topics could remain as-is, just the ones that come up year after year would be in it's own group.

I'm not sure, but I feel like we've already had a section like that... Maybe it was in the FAQ section we used to have. It seemed to work, and I'm not sure where / why it went.

I understand that (and stirring things up is not what I'm trying to do). I'm the type of person who is going to express my opinion. If it stirs things up so be it but in this case I feel something needed to be said. Maybe I should be more thick-skinned but then at the same time some people here need to lay off of the 'superiority complex' they seem to have as well.

I am not sure that I understand this statement, IMO it is nothing more than an oxymoron. As far as being a "superiority complex"....of course it is! (Assuming that you were refering to me) I have been doing this a long long time, as such, I find it repulsive when a NEWBIE (someone who is so new to the hobby) tries to push/force their thoughts and opinions onto others while basically doing nothing more than showing their ass with the whole "I have been chasing for XYZ" card. Just keep in mind that you can't bull**** an old bull****ter. And there are certainly A LOT of people on here who, just like me, are allergic to bull****.

A lot of people here speak their minds... which leads to people clashing... but it's all good. I prefer it over other forums, where you have a bunch of people hiding behind avatars shooting off quips without a real-life personality to back it up. I've had my share of arguments, disagreements, and flames with various ST members... but for the most part we all remain on good grounds.

If you're going to be opinionated, expect to see opposing opinions in return. Like any niche community, you'll often have arguments, disagreements, and all-out flame wars between people... it's just something you'll have to deal with.

Jeremy don't worry about the members who you feel treated you like dirt or attacked you. Just ignore them and know you are more mature then they are. If they PM you don't reply back because they are just wasting your time. You did not know you would open a can of worms with that thread but now you do know. It happens. I did not think you were trying to force your views on anyone. I read the thread and you were simply starting discussion and then replying to people in a calm manner who replied to you. Members just became tired of the discussion. That's all. There is alot of nice members here but with over 1,000 members it is hard not to have controversial and heated topics go down the drain.

It's also the off-season. Until SPC releases the first SLGT risk in March, it's likely to get pretty heated in here. You just have to roll with the punches. I kind of like the idea that was posted earlier. Maybe we should create a sticky thread in the Educational section that contains a running list of "frequently discussed topics" and some links to the previous threads.

I'll run this by some the other mods.

For every one person who unknowingly opens a fresh lightbar thread, there are probably dozens more who quietly search the topic and no one ever knows. What I think would be fascinating is to know what subjects or keywords are most frequently queried in the search function. I doubt there's much of anything "new" save for future reports of events that have yet to happen... then again, chase culture seems to be exploding in popularity these days so who knows?

If you live in the Southern Plains, svr season is never really over ... things can get cranking in December and January. I know. Lost my roof in a tor on January 17, 1996. AT night. And two days after Christmas last year, Mom Nature gave us a decent shelf cloud.

One thing I've come to expect is the unexpected ... LOL!

Sorry for going off topic but, I think last winter there was one day with tornadoes reported in IL for January and the winter before that there was an event in I think February with tornadoes as far north as WI. I think it was 2007 where NE KS/NW MO had some strong tornadoes in February near Colony MO. Florida seems to get a few strong tornadoes ever winter. Having said that most Winters are not going to be active unless you live in the south and even then the events can be few and far between.

I don't really believe it's a superiority complex Jeremy.

When I first joined StormTrack in '05, I did a lot less posting and a lot more reading. By doing that, I learned a lot more that way. StormTrack can be a very good resource for learning and for discussing severe weather and chasing, however, I have found that when new members join and start thinking that they have the need to immediately start controversial topics and/or start thinking that they are God's gift to weather without the resume' to back it up, well, is not well received in this community. I am not talking about you specifically, Jeremy, but as new members as a whole. I am not anti-newbie, but rather it is just a bit of advice.

Topics such as light bars and regulating chasing has been discussed so many times that, unless you have some new revolutionary idea that is unheard of, doesn't need to be repeated over and over again. If you want to know what people think of light bars, do a search. If you want to know our opinions of regulating chasing, search for it. If you want to see what our thoughts are about mobile mesonets, that is on here to. These topics get beat around so much on here it becomes redundant.

And I personally don't like someone suggesting that a hobby I freely participate in should be regulated. No it shouldn't. Like Lanny, I don't like some newbie coming on here telling us that it should be. The search option on forums exist for a reason, yet so few people actually use it. My opinion about repeated and redundant posts is the same on all forums I frequent.

Mikel Shively makes a wonderful point....one that I had already offered to Mr. Den Hartog a month or so back, much like many newbies today, he took much offense to it and this is the problem.
To many newbies get offened when someone gives contructive criticism to them or tries to point them in the right direction. This is something I absolutely cannot stand and will not tolerate. After all, I have much more important things to do with my time than try to "teach" or help someone who will not listen or simply does not want to learn. I will leave that up to those that have more patience and can stand the bull****.
Mikel said it just as Shane Adams did, as I did and as many many others have....newbies should be reading more and posting less, most particularly about controversial issues.
