High Voltage Megawatt Gallery

Confessed lightning fanatic? Think in high voltage, dream in megawatts? This gallery is for you! Post your favorite high intensity lightning shots...cloud-to-ground, cloud-to-air, cloud-to-cloud, intra-cloud...or just plain raw electricity. The only specification is that the photos, color, etc. should be the real deal, not altered in Photoshop (so we can marvel at Nature's glorious lightshow as it really happened.) If you also have extreme lightning behavior on film...please share! Have fun! (PS...there's a thread in ST Discussion Forum about posting pics, if you're not sure how). We luv rock & roll electricity! 8)

Beautiful images as always Susan. Over here it has been a very dissapointing few months since Christmas with little opportunity for lightning. In fact none!

With Winter just a few weeks away my only hope is with some offshore cells as cold air passes over the relative warmth of the ocean.

Some of my better shots from late last year

Very simple I know, but I like the water.

This small cell was moving at an estimated 40- 50mph. The updraft was literally boiling.

This cell formed as a cold pool in the middle / upper atmosphere passed offshore. It was a very isolated storm. Is it a rare example of a single cell storm?

teach me.

I've never been able to master lightning shots.

I have to get out the format cameras to do bulb shots and times exposures, but not a clue on the digital stuff.

beautiful pictures btw.

Nice shots!!

I have never taken lightning photographs; I recently bought a Canon EOS 350D camera, which can be used to take that kind of photos, but there is a long way to learn.

I have been using a Nikon CoolPix775 for taking my weather photographs and storm-chases but it has not a Bulb Mode.

I'm sure I could show you some interesting pics about lightning next summer; severe storms season will began very soon in Spain  :)

I do straight film. I work with manual cameras, B setting and slow speed film. I have never shot digital. Is it really "there" yet for this type of night work? Perhaps someone can comment.

Please keep the Megawatt gallery in mind 8) I would love to see some shots from Spain!

Those shots over the sea (and stars)!

and that Grand Canyon!!

AWESOME :)

Both those scenarios have tricky lighting conditions too.

Gorgeous! Actually, that looks about the right color for a monsoon sky, after the sandstorm has passed through. That looks like a close one too!

June 12th, 2004, Aaron Kennedy has the exact same bolt of lightning photographed from a few miles to my north west

I'll Stop here I have tons more on my site, wonderful pictures that everyone else has.

Joey - LOL! Wouldn't it be nice to make lightning on command 8)

Kurt - those images rock. Michigan in late summer? Or the Plains?

Bill - not an artifact. I would guess that the lightning hit something chemical, similar to transformers turning green when they get hit and explode. I have been near one of those when it blew  When I'm shooting storms from mountain overlooks and looking down on city lights, I have seen the red color too, just like your picture. Does anyone know what that is?

Gotcha - you did :) That one from Grand Rapids though looks like something from some huge MCS in the Plains! Awesome. You get some good ones up there late summer I understand. PS - have you ever tried for a lightning/lighthouse combo? Possible?

If im around Susan I might try that light house thing. Dont know where ill be this summer after the plains. It would be cool though, but i dont go to the lake all to often becasue when ever i do go the storms die, when i dont I catch them here. Go figure

Charles that high way looks like a river of fire pretty cool

For web based work ..yes ! For professional I still think it is borderline unless you have one of those 14mp ' sell you house for ' type digitals.

I must confess I use digital nowadays, I have used film in fact the shot below is film with my old Nikon FA.

I often chase with a partner who thinks that digital is the tool of the devil, but it is all good natured fun.

Great pictures, I really like the lightning and stars one!

Sort of off topic but since you use film what scanner do you use to scan the pictures in Susan?
