• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

I just got my ham license and need to buy a radio for the field. I'd prefer a hand held but would consider a mounted one in my Tundra if that's best. Any suggestions from others that are hams?

if you want one that has a detachable face, and are looking for a dual band I would go with the Icom IC-208 mobile, that is if they have not discontinued it yet. I would not recomend a hand held in the vehicle as you will not get very good signal out.
if you are looking for a straight 2M rig, then look at Icom, and Yeasu. The other option is looking at old public service radios such as a GE MVS, if you have all the right stuff they are easy to program, and there a good solid radio also.

Hope this helps.

What band(s) do you want to operate on? What's better for how you want to communicate - a portable handheld or a permanent mount in your Tundra?

Probably, you just need to consider if you'd ever want to be out and about with the radio too.

Speaking of - I now live in a UHF area so am selling off my Icom IC-2000H. Works great, comes with mic and DC power cord and manual, and I just put a brand new LCD front panel on (chaser partner's kids touched it with sticky fingers.)

$100 + your choice shipping if interested.

I would invest in the antenna and feedline (yes, even 2M at short distances) first, then go with a high-power (65-75 watt) single-band, 2M rig (assuming that's the right band for your area). My favorites have been Yaesu models, but I've owned Icom products and have been happy.

I have a spare Yaesu FT-2800M that is available. Max 65W output. PM if interested.

No, just a nice UHF handheld since all of our police/fire comms are UHF anyways. I never really do much with the ham radio while chasing anyways...
