• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

I agree, you do get what you pay for in mobile antennas, Ive tried pretty much all of them. I currently use an SBB-5 from comet, its not as tall as some with more gain, I did successfully talk to a fellow chaser last year 20 miles simplex when we got seperated in TX using that antenna and 50 watts.

I currently use a Comet C767 NMO on a fender mount and love it's performance. I've also got a Larsen dual band that I sometimes use as well on the roof mount, but normally take it off when I'm not chasing since I use a garage.

Definitely go with the best antenna you can afford. If you don't want to go drilling holes in your car, I'd suggest a trunk-mount antenna. It clips to the lip of your trunk. Should provide better signal than a mag-mount with little-to-no vehicle damage.

Be weary of mag mounts! It's great that there's no holes, but over time you might fight tiny scratches, as I have on my trunk deck. I now have a trunk mount base with a small 18" dual band antenna.

As for a radio, I'm using a Yaesu FT8000-R. The R means that it can cross repeat, which is nice if you want to use your HT but can't hit the repeater on its low power. I've heard most Yaesu are bad with alternator noise but this one seems to do the trick.

As for antennas, Comet or Larson are my picks. The MFJ (Mighty Fine Junk) have a tendency to not be built very well. Since I needed an SMA connector for my trunk mount, I went with a Maldol AS-30 that I picked up in Dayton. My setup has no problems hitting a repeater about 30 miles away on low power.
