30F at Bigfork, MN at 6:30AM with frost advisories in N WI.

I'm curious what the record is for earliest freezing temperatures outside of the Rockies or northeast Appalachians.

Oh you mean below +32F, I thought we were talking negative numbers lol. I was out really early this morning and it was a Chilly 44 degrees, dang close to the record.

Glasgow, MT reports its earliest freeze as August 23, although their record low for August 11 is 30 degrees (1893.)

In International Falls, MN, a low of 32 has occurred as early as August 21.

Temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year in Bismarck and Minot, ND (the NWS Bismarck climate page does not provide daily extremes - just monthly records.)

I was in Cadillac, Michigan from Friday afternoon through Monday morning (8/31). There was plenty of frost on the roofs Monday morning, and checking the hourly temps online, I see that the 7 a.m. temperature there was 32F. That might be my first experience of freezing temperatures in August, and certainly is if you don't count mountainous areas.

signs of a harsh winter ahead?

Here in Nashville, i've noticed the damn leaves are already falling and turning colors, which usually doesn't happen around here until mid to late october.

i hope this is not a sign of a long cold winter to come.

The leaves here in Kansas are already turning and some trees are bare. Out at my house the other day the low was 34 degrees. I am not a forecaster so I am not for sure what this means for winter weather-probably nothing. I love snow so I am hoping for a lot of it.

I have been looking at some other peoples models for this coming weekend on other sites and it might be very cold for this time of the year. Already going to be well below average but some people are predicting temperatures in the upper 40's as a high.

I forgot to check into it...but someone posted on another forum that some high elevation in Montana may see near zero degree temperatures.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I had some thoughts. I'm guessing there is no record because there is a continuous streak of sub 32F temps at some place (in the areas you mentioned) every day of the year.
