Dash Cam Suggestions

Yeah, I don't want to spend that much on a BlackVue either. I have GoPros but I don't want to fiddle with a camera to turn it on. Does the Rove 4k Pro turn on with the car Warren?

Yes, it automatically turns on when the car is running, as long as the power source is connected to an "ignition on" power source. You would not want to connect it to a source that is on all the time.

Please don't pounce on me for my noob camera question, but do dashcams do a "decent enough" job of capturing tornados/storm structures? My focus is not really on video/photographing storms, mostly just there for the experience, but I would like to have something to show the folks back home, as they say. I am also thinking of doing a video blog/chase documentary so I need some way to capture video. Anyways, I wouldn't do much if any videographing outside of chasing, so not looking to spend big bucks here.

The main reason people are picky on dash cams for chasing is the low light situations. There are some out there (like the one Warren mentioned and the BlackVue) that do very well in the low light situations that you'll often find yourself in chasing. Others are rather useless in the same situations. What you'll need to ensure is that you pick one that will do adequately in low light, or you won't get much out of it. Also, you'll need to be cognizant of which way your vehicle is pointed if that's your primary means for video.

2 more questions. What are the major differences between the Rove Stealth 4k and the Rove R2 4K? Specifically, given I am not going to be marketing any of the footage, I mostly just want it for posterity and to do a little first chasecation video blog, is the Stealth "worth" the extra $100?
Does anyone have any input on the shaking question that was posed earlier? Does the suction cup attachment lead to more shaking on the camera?
I am looking to buy a dashcam and 128 gb sd card today, so that I will get it shipped to me in time to head out to OK on Tuesday. Thanks

I’m pretty new to the Rove family, but I have watched some video that I took while driving. I didn’t notice any “wiggle” in the video. I’m assuming that’s because it has image stabilization built into it.

The Stealth is true 4k. It's been replaced by the Pro. Wifi is a little faster with the Pro. I've never noticed any shaking with any of my cams except when my bass is pounding.

This is an awesome thread and opened my eyes up to what's available regarding dashcams. I Googled the model @Ben Holcomb mentioned and learned quite a bit last night. My question is this. What would a non storm chaser use these for? Filming traffic as they drive or parking help seems like it wouldn't create a need for that large of a market share and different models but apparently I'm wrong. I bought the newest GoPro this Spring without realizing there were purpose-built dashcams galore available.

They've paid for themselves many times over for me. Accidents, even accusations. I've been blamed flat out for a accident and the cop just said "Ma'am, I've seen the video the other driver has already".

That's definitely a legit use. I'd like to have video of some of the kooks I see on the interstates in Denver. Some of these nutcases drive like 90 or 100 swerving in and out of lanes without a care in the world. If they can cut it by 6" they'll grab whatever space is available. I'm very interested in these devices and will probably end up with one before next year.

Go to YouTube and search for crazy traffic accidents caught on dash cams in Russia or the Middle East. You'll find days-worth of videos of stuff these people catch because so many of them use dash cams on a regular basis! Some of them are downright scary.

Jeff is correct, many of the notable dash cam videos on YouTube come out of Russia. You'll see some crazy stuff. I know my company provides them in our semis for that reason. I can't pull them from within the truck, otherwise I would have had some interesting video from the other night through Denver. 70 EB out of Denver was rather chaotic for 10pm on Monday night. I really need to put one in my personal vehicle, but I'm a stickler for wiring stuff to turn on/off with ignition, and I just haven't had the time to mess with it lately, or the weather has otherwise been poor, and I don't have a garage to work in (yet).
