Very neat! Looking at current RUC mesonalysis --> http://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/mesoanalysis/s4/300mb.gif <-- , there appears to be very strong lateral shear on the west side of the large upper-level vortex. This strong shear instability appears to be leading to the development of vort maxes, which then intensify as they move southward into the northcentral US.
