Canon 60D or Canon T3i? Anyone shoot with these cameras?

I'm in the market of getting a new DSLR camera as I'm upgrading from my Canon Xti.

I have read many reviews on both the Canon 60D and the Canon T3i. These are the two I have norrowed down my choices two unless you strongly have another recommendation. So what i'm trying to figure out is if the 60D is worth the extra $150. So I wanted to open up a discussion and see if anyone has shot with either of these cameras. Then hear some Pros and Cons about them when you were actually using them out in the field.

I love to take photography but I'm also wanting to take more Video as well during my chases.

Thanks for your time and can we please get Mother Nature to flip the storm season switch!

I would recommend you go for the T2i ( body only) instead of the T3i or 60D, and get an extra battery and grip. And do get the excellent 15-85 IS lens. What other lenses do you already have ?

I looked at both cameras and went with the 60D. They are very, very similar. So similar in fact I'm not sure that both are really even needed. The differences between the two come down to the build of the body, some extra knobs, a top display, and few features in the autofocus and movie shooting. As far as I'm concerned they shoot the exact same picture since they have the same sensor and processor. The 60D seems to have a few more conveniences for shooting photos with its top display and extra buttons. The T3i has a very nice movie shooting feature though. It will crop the data coming in from the sensor while shooting movies so that you can effectively "zoom in" digitally without quality loss. So instead of your movie being cropped and resized which results in pixelation and quality loss like how a normal digital zoom works, your movie stays the same size and just zooms into a portion of that 18 megapixel sensor. Ultimately I went with the 60D because Adorama had a batch of refurbs in which made the price more competitive than the T3i, and the movie cropping feature wasn't enough to sway me since I have an HD camcorder.

If you want a slightly better build and more convenience for shooting stills, go with the 60D.
If you are going to shoot a lot of movies you might want to check into that T3i.

The lenses I have currently are (kit lens) Canon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 , Canon Zoon lens EF 75-300mm 4-5.6, & Wide angle lens Tokina PRO SD 12-24 F4 DX

Right Now my Budget is around $900 and hence why i'm going back in forth.

I would say for the T2i or T3i is the way to go on a budget. Both are great cameras for the price, just remember you will need a 32 GB or 16 GB class 6 or higher SD card to record video on these. Make sure you buy a quality SD card, I would say a Sandisk or Kingston don't buy a cheap one and risk losing your photos or videos. By the way hope you like the Tokina lens!

So far Scott I haven't been able to use it that much but the few pictures I have taken have been great. The only thing I wished it had was Autofocus as wearing glasses. Autofocus is nice to have for some generally shooting and not having to use the viewfinder that much.

You need to find a best buy and hold both in your hands. I went with the 60D after holding them both and messing around with them for a good while. I don't think you can fail either way but I didn't want to sell myself short and just spent the extra $$ on the better build.

I almost always shoot with manual focus set to infinity on a wide angle lens at 12mm. Well hopefully sometime soon Oklahoma will have a nice chase day where you can use the lens.

And after you hold them both and decide, go back home, jump online and price them out on Amazon or Buydig.com and get the best price :-)

I won't get into the 60D vs T3i debate other than to say buy the T2i rather than the T3i. The ONLY difference between the two models is the screen flips out on the T3i. In fact, the T3i has been downgraded; only shooting 720p HD video rather than the 1080p of the T2i. Hardly worth the cost difference for a fold-out screen and lesser shooting ability.

60D.............(dots for length)..................is my vote.

Any supporting reasoning? (That's what the remaining required characters were for, not dots ;) )

There's apparently some conflicting information on the web about this, but from the reviews and spec sheets I've read, I'm almost certain the T3i shoots 1920x1080 at 30p, 25p, and 24p. Canon would slaughter their sales if they downgraded to a 720p movie shooting mode.

Edit: Mike H just informed that difference is between the t3i and t3 :P

T3 shoots that lower res. They had to go and make the next "XS"
> version named the T3 to mess with everyone, while the T3i comes out at
> the same time.

I guess they had the XS come out around the same time as the XSi so
maybe it's not that surprising of a naming system. What is crazy they
even have as many levels as they do. 60D and T3i similar enough and
they even have that T3 out below them lol. Really wonder how well
that does though with 12 mp and new processing than the XSi had.
Almost tempted to get one of those with less pixels on the sensor and
the newer technology.

Well, all it takes to know if you're right or wrong about something is to post on StormTrack. Learned something new today, thanks Skip!
